Jared Leto can definitely pull off the role of the joker without coming across as campy or cheesy. Known for his unconventional role portraying a trans-gender woman in Dallas Buyers Club, he will surely be able to carry a unique look with tattoos and dental grills as the villainous Joker, carrying on after Heath Ledger.
Photos of Jared Leto in his Joker-style costume have been out in the media, and he looks downright creepy. He can act, so I am sure he can take on the part in that respect, but seeing him actually looking like the Joker seals the idea that he will be perfect for the part.
It was never going to be easy for the next person to play the Joker after Heath Ledger, but I think Jared Leto will pull it off. It looks as though his character is going to be different to how we've seen the Joker played before - and different to Ledger's, too, which is crucial.
Although I find Leto to be a fine actor in other roles, I don't think he is well suited for the role of the Joker. Unlike previous Jokers - Cesar Romero included - he lacks the serious, grim carriage of one of the DC Universe's most favorite villains. Although the Joker is clearly a madman, he is canonically a proud and almost precise madman, with virtually perfect posture and impeccable style. Leto's Joker is sloppy and slouchy - his posture is terrible and his clothing appears to have come from the rag bin of the local Goodwill. It is mismatched, fits poorly, and he doesn't even bother to button his shirt. Even Cesar Romero, the campiest Joker of all, wouldn't have been caught dead looking like that.
