The rules of celibacy for Catholic priests should be abandoned

  • They should have a choice

Priests and the Pope should be able to choose whether they get married or not. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that you shouldn't get married so it is unbiblical. Yes the Bible talks about how being single is better as there are no distractions and you can focus on serving the Lord. However at the end of the day Celibacy is a man made law.

  • The church would only benefit

The modern catholic church is confronted with two mains issues regarding priesthoods: The molestations scandals and the lack of new priests. Abandoning celibacy would reduce both of these in my opinion. Sex is an instinct and some priests have to take it out on children. Also, I believe many people don't decide to become priests because they simply don't want to be celibate. In my opinion, priesthoods should also be opened to women. If you look on the protestant side, you see much less scandals, while priest are just as professional. Katy Perry's parents are both preachers and she turned out fine.

  • Celibacy for Catholic priests is based on financial interests and a lie, not on scripture

Early priests were allowed to have wives in children. For instance, in 580 AD Pope Pelagius II's policy was not to bother married priests as long as they did not hand over church property to wives or children. Enforcing celibacy is a method for the church to ensure that his assets go solely to the church upon his death (rather than his heirs). Celibacy for priests is based on a lie and financial greed, not on scripture or the teachings of Jesus/God. It needs to be scrapped because it is wrong.

  • Its not even a traditional rule

I can ynderstand why people dont want it chamged because they think its a tradition and i dont think it has anything to do woth free choice. You chcoose to be a clergy member and you no that celibacy comes with the territory and you can leave whenever you want or go to a Christian sect that allows it. So im not overly concerned with it changing.

However as this rule is pointless and does have some negative consequences and isnt even a religious tradition as it was nonexistent until Pope Gregory.

  • Allow them to make the choice

Free will is always the better option. Sex is a natural instinct and forcing them to suppress those types of desires brings more harm than good. Additionally, I feel as though forcible celibacy is a contributing factor to the molestation scandal. If celibacy in the priesthood were to be made optional, there might be less cases of sexual exploitation of minors.

  • If men don't want to be celibate they shouldn't become priests

Celibacy in the priesthood has been a tradition for hundreds of years. Why should they change it now? Celibacy for nuns and priests is so that they can concentrate on God and not the desires of the flesh. In a way nuns and priests are married to god. Also if you are already married and become a priest you can stay married. One of the priests at my church is married.

  • The words of Jesus make a strong case for celibacy.

Luke 20:34-35 "And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage:"

Matthew 19:12 "For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it."

I did not fully understand these sayings until I chose celibacy.
