Was breaking into the Watergate hotel an important part of Richard Nixon's re-election campaign?

  • The Watergate Hotel

I personally think that In January 1972, G. Gordon Liddy, general counsel to the Committee for the Re-Election of the President (CRP), presented a campaign intelligence plan to CRP's Acting Chairman Jeb Stuart Magruder, Attorney General John Mitchell, and Presidential Counsel John Dean, that involved extensive illegal activities against the Democratic Party. Mitchell viewed the plan as unrealistic, but two months later is alleged to have approved a reduced version of the plan which involved burgling the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate Complex in Washington, D.C., the ostensible purpose of which was to photograph documents and install listening devices

  • Yes, it was he just got caught

He should have never done it,but it played a huge crucial part in his election. It also helped the US realize what kind of people are getting into office. You can't do something like that and expect to get away with it. It also laid waste to anything that he contributed to this country, he did it and got caught.

  • It didn't make a difference.

No, breaking into the Watergate hotel was not an important part of Richard Nixon's re-election campaign, because breaking into the hotel and the democratic offices did not ultimately have a result on the outcome of the election. It obviously unraveled his career. But it did not affect the campaign either way.

  • No, breaking into the Watergate hotel was not an important part of Richard Nixon's re-election campaign.

It cannot be said for sure if breaking into the Watergate hotel was important or not for Nixon's re-election campaign. What can be said for sure is that it wasn't something that he should have condone. It definitely was the most significant aspect of his fall from the office of the POTUS.

  • Not at all

No, this event did not have a big part in the campaign that he was in. I think that the outcome of the election would have been the same if he did or did not break into this hotel. I think that it would have all ended up the same.
