Now, was slavery the exact reason for conflict? No, it wasn't. Firing on Fort Sumter was the direct issue. The direct issue that caused that was the Federal garrison refusing to leave. What caused that was the Federal Government's response to secession, which was caused by secession, which was caused by a state's rights movement, which was caused by a fear of the Republican Party, because of Abolitionism, which was all about... Slavery.
So directly the war wasn't about slavery. But the foundation of the war was about slavery.
The South expelled itself from the Union because the North outlawed slavery in new western territories. The South saw this as an issue of State's right, which revolved around the subject of slavery. It was the catalyst that caused the South to secede and the North to fight to preserve to Union.
The only reason why they the civil war happened was because of slavery Abraham Lincoln was voted president and freed slaves at the same time the south broke off from the united states and form the confederacy so they can keep slavery and if the confederacy won there would be slavery and even more racism then how it is now
While I have to admit I'm not an expert, I'd like to add my two cents. The question is "Was the Civil War ABOUT slavery in your opinion?" Clearly YES it was but there were also many other reasons for the war. While slavery was not the catalyst, it did become the focal point later during the war. I believe (and I could be wrong here sense I'm not scholar) that the war was started because the South seceded from the North due to their disagreement over states rights. One of the main arguments was about whether newly acquired territories were to allow slaves or not. The South argued for the right of the states to decide and the North argued that the federal government was to decide. The inability to compromise led to the South seceding from the Union. The Union felt this was unconstitutional and thus the war began. Later during the war Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and slavery became an even bigger factor of the war.
So, to say that the Civil War wasn't ABOUT slavery would be insane. However, if you were to ask "was slavery the main CAUSE of the Civil War?" then there would be legitimate debate over this question.
Yes I agree that the American Civil War was in fact about slavery. The North thought that slavery was bad although they still kept slaves but the South believed that slavery was a business and to loose slaves would ruin their economy. But I believe that slavery was where our country went wrong and the Union was trying to fix that.
It obviously is. The south left because they did not like the rules. The main rule that pushed them away was slavery. The south wanted slavery, so that the slaves could run the plantations and make the whites, down in the south money, off of the blacks work, so it was indeed about slavery.
.... How is it not.
It’s a war between the confederate and union states. The south was racist and wanted some money from agriculture while the north was fine and self sufficient without agricultural labor. Soooo yeah it’s kinda common sense, there is literally nothing else that would trigger such a huge civil war between the states other than money, which is closely linked to slavery.
When Lincoln was elected president, he enforced the emancipation proclamation which said all slaves in the confederacy were free. But did that really free them? NO! The confederacy kept their slaves because they wanted help from Europe . The reason he didn't free the slaves in the North is because he was afraid we would loose the border states which wouldn't be good since Maryland was a border state.

You can disagree with me all you want. But the area known as Darien, GA, was really a Scottish colony. As a matter of fact, many of the colonies of what would become the Southern USA were originally Scottish or Spanish. Here's the catch, slavery would only be legal in the Southern region of the USA when the English took it over. The Scottish, and even the Spanish, don't have the history of this that the English have. To me the Civil War was Scottish rebels, who had nothing to do with slavery, overriding an English tyrant. When the mostly English Union, because the North was English. And the slaveowners in the South were of English descent, won, and initiated Reconstruction, that's when Jim Crow (from the North) came in. And only then did the real subjugation begin. It was the English elite that made the racist laws.

John F. Kelly was right. The Civil War was not about slavery. It was about a lack of ability to COMPROMISE (on the issue of slavery). These are two completely different things.
This ethically neutral view of the world is lots of fun. Here are some other lacks of ability to compromise
Abraham Lincoln said if he went to war and free zero slaves and preserve the Union, he would, but if he could free all slaves and preserve the Union he would. It was never about slavery, it was about state's right of seceding from the Union. Slavery became and issue of the Civil War, but it was never about slavery. Slavery caused it yes, but that doesn't mean it was about slavery. The whole reason the south seceded is over fear that they would lose their economy after losing slavery. This is a general fear shared by many southerners, so this is why they seceded. But the North started the war to preserve the Union, not to end slavery. That was not what the war was started on. Was it a war on slavery, or a war on the Confederate States of America? My point is, if you said yes, it's a common misconception to think it was started for slavery, but slavery only became an issue after the Emancipation Proclamation. IT was originally about preserving the Union, and it wasn't started because of the slavery issue.
Im not taking sides on the south or north....Both were wrong. The south was about states rights. Everyone thinks the north were the good guys...Sorry to break it to you, they were not. Any of you people can argue other wise but i have researched this alot and i know what im talking about.Anyone who says it was over slavery is wrong and needs to go back to school and learn their history, and do deeper research. Dont just take it from the teachers words. I have heard every history teacher say the north was in the right and south are the bad guys. People are just to easy to trick.... History teachers say north are good guys and south are bad guys and everyone believes them.
A a a a .A... A a as a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a .A .A. .A .A. .A .A ...
The south wanted slavery the north didn't . The south wanted to make their own laws but the north just wanted slavery gone immediately. Slavery was wrong no doubt. However, the south wanted to make their own laws and the north didn't want them to. The Civil War was an issue of people making their own choices and then not being able to.
The Civil War is still a topic of debate I see. After all this time people cant agree on why it really happened, even when the evidence is right there. It may be because we are raised to believe that the Confederacy was a bunch of racist rednecks who just wanted to keep black men and women under their feet. Many were not in fact like that.
There is TWO major things people overlook when the topic of the US Civil War comes up. One, people back then were more loyal to their home, their state, then to their country. This I find understandable. Many of the southerners were not fighting to keep slaves, and I'm pretty sure many think that. I'm pretty sure they didn't care what happened to their slaves. I'm not talking about the politicians. They don't count in the overall population in my opinion. If my home was threatened, I'd be more worried about that then some slave. Would a boy, about 12-15 really care if his papa kept his slaves? Or a old man who's lived his life out to the fullest?
My second point is, who writes the history books?
Who taxes people more then they can handle and they end up on the street? People who are born to low income family's often end up with their parents debut that is to much for them to handle, and it just becomes worse with each generation.
In the end, the winners write the history books. If England had won in the revolution, it would have been written of as a pitiful rebellion and every last of the founding fathers beheaded. Do any of us really hear about the war of 1812? No not really, not unless you read about it yourself. You know why? Because we lost that war. When a government looses they don't want to admit it. When they do win they may exaggerate some of the details to make their story better.
The was accully started because the industry in the north taxes the agricultural south to much that they got mad left the union and moved the industry to the big cities. States like Maryland were forced to stay in the union because linlcon put the secessionist in jail. Also Lincoln freed the slaves of the seceding stated but NOT THE BORDERS. Don't lisint to anything textbook tell you about the south its all wrong. THE SOUTH WAS RIGHT
The CSA succeeded because it was tired of being apart of America they didn't like Lincoln not for slavery but because according to them he was oppressing states rights so in South Cariolna Republic te army of SCR shelled an American base still there after succession so the USA fought back and than began the Civil War ownership of slaves was a deal made over the Mississippi Compermise in the 1850's at the Hightower of American slavery the south's Econmie was based on Plantion and the North's was industry and northern republicans challenged the democrats at this deal and the slaves becam a subject of debate and the south felt this was a oppression of rights of a state and 11 sates delcraed to be republics and formed a confedracy of republics and the deal was if the south won each state would be a republic and the confederacy would be disband and if worse
comes to worse the conferacey would re-unite but since they lost Lincoln decided that as a punishment to the south they must relese all slaves and the emancipation proclamation was created IM NOT A SOUTHERN REDNECK WHO SUPPORTS THE CSA I ONLY SPEAK OF HOW HISTORY WENT
