Was Toon Link nerfed from Brawl to Smash 4?

  • YEs, He was

Although I still enjoy playing smash 4 toon link, It's undeniable that he has taken some noticeable nerfs.

First of all, Let's discuss his air game:

    - n-air does a lot less damage, Going from 10% on both hits to 8. 5% on the first, And 7% on the second

-n-air, F-air, And most notably b-air have more end lag, With b-air taking the biggest hit, Going from a FAF of 32 to a whopping 46. This removes all of the crazy back air strings brawl Toon Link had, Stripping away its versatility.

-n-air and b-air auto cancel much later, Reducing the ability to throw out SHFF aerials. B-air also has 17 frames of landing lag compared to 10 frames on brawl.

    - d-air was COMPLETELY destroyed. It comes out at frame 17 compared to frame 12 in brawl and also, It pierces foes rather than bouncing off. This removes all combo and damage potential it once had, And most importantly, Takes away Toon link's to spike off stage without killing himself, EVEN if the attack lands

    - Zair has increased ending lag (frame 71 → 75) and landing lag (2 frames → 8). This significantly hinders zair's edge guard potential, As well its ability to combo into almost every move, Most notably up smash for a true kill confirm and n-air for damage

-Z dropping bombs will result in toon link no longer just dropping the bomb, But also firing off his zair at the same time. His ability to reliably Z drop and re catch bombs with aerials (ZAC, IZAC) is completely removed as a result.

-Quickdrawing was removed, Significantly hindering bow's utility.

    - The distance granted by up B was cut nearly in half, Significantly hampering his recovery without z-air, Making semi spikes much more dangerous, And reducing his ability to go deep for edge guards.

-Dash attack no longer semi spikes due to having its angle changed, And also no longer trips foes, Removing a lot of its utility.

-Up smash does less damage and has more end lag, And down smash was especially hit hard

  • Yes, Most definitely, With his aerials and smashes taking a MASSIVE hit.

Although I still enjoy playing smash 4 toon link, It's undeniable that he has taken some noticeable nerfs.

-Dash attack no longer semi spikes due to having its angle changed, And also lost its ability to lock and trip foes, Removing a lot of its utility.

-Up smash does less damage and has more end lag, And down smash was especially hit hard since it deals less damage (11% to 7%) and has decreased weight-based knockback, Severely reducing its ability to ko aerial opponents.

So yeah, While smash 4 toon link is a fine character, It's clear that he has been VERY toned down since brawl, With a lot of his options being removed. When a character has less options in a fighting game, They can't function has well against the entire cast, So their weakness become more apparent and easily exploitable, As is the case with smash 4 toon link.
