No, they are socially constructed. Gender roles didn't exist during the Paleolithic era of human existence. It wasn't until human beings began to settle in different places, and men took charge that gender roles started to make their way into people's lives.

Gender roles are things like, "Women belong in the kitchen" and "Real men don't cry". Not testosterone or estrogen.

Majority of people who are saying yes to this are probably getting gender roles mixed up with gender.
