Are religions cults?

Posted by: silent.extrovert

Some families pressure children to remain in the family religion or they could be disowned. This is commonly found in many religions, like Christianity and islam

Religion is not clearly defined in any way ( which in itself could be a debate.) The one definition that I agree with is by Anthropologist, Melford Spiro: "Religion is an institution consisting of culturally patterned interactions with culturally postulated superhuman beings." The key couple of words here are "superhuman beings." Most cult definitions say a "group or system," with "religious beliefs and rituals," and are "devoted to one particular person or object." Nowhere does it say "superhuman beings"- It simply says "a particular person or object." In my mind, this helps me to conclude that no, religions cannot be considered cults. I'm always happy to debate this and/ or more with anyone who's willing. Thanks for the read everyone and have a great week!
