The Islamic Revolution (also known as the National Revolution of Iran or the 1979 Revolution; Persian: Enghelābe Jomhuri or Enqelāb 22 Bahman) refers to events involving the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, who was supported by the United States, and its eventual replacement with an Islamic republic under the Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of the revolution, supported by various leftist and Islamic organizations and Iranian student movements. • That picture is of Iran before the Islamic Revolution, what do you think?

  • Sure the Shah of Iran ruled with absolute power, but he only did it because of the influences and pressures from the Soviet union and wanted to keep Iran in one piece so that is why he arrested, suppressed, and killed communists, nationalists, etc and there was also a reason why we also overthrew prime minister Mohammad mosaddegh in a coup in 1953 because he was hostile and against western civilization just like ayatollah Khomeini and (again) is the reason why iran (pro-west)'s monarchy ruled with absolute power which (unfortunately) led to the end of the pro-western monarchy and being replaced by an authoritarian, theocratic anti-western regime or dictatorship.

To finish that last sentence: While the Soviet Union immediately recognized the new Islamic Republic, it did not actively support the revolution, initially making efforts to salvage the Shah's government.

The ayatollah may not have been a great leader; but he was a million times better than the shah (who killed millions through his secret police) because he was supported by the majority of the people.

1313socialist: I don't think it's really about the leader, more about Iran becoming a theocratic state and all the changes, reforms, and even the war that came out of it.

What is wrong with theocracy? What wars were started? Iran-Iraq war was Iraq and the USA. Why does everybody assume, that if you are against the west, you are horrible?
