  • Fully automatic guns should only be used by military and law enforcement personnel.

  • There is no need for U.S. citizens to have fully automatic machine guns as they serve no practical use. Automatic assault rifles are not used for hunting or shooting sports and could be a risk to others.

  • American taxpayers pay roughly $12.8 million every day to cover the costs of gun-related deaths and injuries— and that is a conservative estimate. Thats $229 Billion a year or $700 each.

  • We should be able to protect ourselves. If you know how to use a gun, you don't have to be scared of it. Same thing with cars.

  • I disagree. Before the 1986 full auto ban (didn't COMPLETELY ban full autos, just prevented the production of any new ones) there were no issues with full autos on the street. I'm actually pretty satisfied with the tougher background checks and tax stamp to receive a full auto. If you are PROVEN to be a law abiding citizen and mentally sane, you shouldn't be prohibited from owning a full auto. (perhaps if you have a full auto, maybe you should be required to have it stored in a gun safe)

  • I like my dakka. Leave it alone.

  • AR 15 can be fire almost as fast as an automatic weapon so yeah this law is useless

  • I believe that as long as you are trained, a gun is perfectly safe. many people I know have hunted/shot guns their whole life, and I only know one that has had an accident with a discharge

  • They are less dangerous than semi auto weapons. If you shoot one like people are so afraid you will, 1, you will run out of ammo in 3 seconds, 2, most of your shots will be so wildly off target, you might as well be shooting blanks. All the ban does is bring up the price on an m16 from $2000 to $15-20,000.

Also, common rifles like the AR 15 are not fully automatic just to inform those who are unaware.
ladiesman says2015-04-23T21:40:01.6277630-05:00
@gabep That's what I think. When I say "banned", I mean civilians should not be allowed to own one. USN276, like I said before, fully automatic weapons can fire numerous rounds whenever the trigger is pulled. Those are the types of guns I think civilians should be prohibited from owning.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-23T21:43:49.6932144-05:00
There is a difference between restrictions and banning everyone but military and law enforcement personnel. I personally agree there should be more restrictions, but I believe there are civilians that can be trusted with full auto weapons.
ladiesman says2015-04-23T21:46:09.2371934-05:00
What are the practical uses an average civilian would use a full auto gun for?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-23T21:49:09.3490212-05:00
Firing ranges. Self defense. Gun collecting.
ladiesman says2015-04-23T21:53:24.8949755-05:00
@Mathgeekjoe Pistols would suffice for self-defense.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-23T21:56:12.5791099-05:00
Throwing knives are sufficient in self defense.
ladiesman says2015-04-23T21:59:11.5884676-05:00
@ Mathgeekjoe Why are we talking about throwing knives? And what are you talking about when you said, "There is a difference between restrictions and bans"?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-23T22:00:41.9304365-05:00
"Why are we talking about throwing knives?" You said pistols are sufficient, I say you don't need pistols if you have throwing knives.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-23T22:04:05.4210073-05:00
What I meant by difference between ban and restriction based on which level of generality you go at. If we are talking about all civilians, then there is a difference between banning all civilians and restricting which civilians can own.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-23T22:05:14.8229858-05:00
If you are talking about everyone, then you could call a ban on every civilian a restriction on people in general. If you are talking about felons, then a restriction on civilians would be a ban on them.
ladiesman says2015-04-23T22:11:42.8329396-05:00
In that case, I think all civilians (felons included) should not be allowed to own or use an automatic weapon. Let's be reasonable; there is no lawful reason for the ordinary civilian to own a gun that can fire multiple rounds whenever the trigger is pulled. Ownership and use of an automatic weapon should have only two exceptions: military and law enforcement.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-23T22:45:40.9505378-05:00
What lawful reason does a civilian have to own a pistol?
ladiesman says2015-04-23T23:09:14.0452855-05:00
Pistols are highly recommended for self-defense.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-23T23:10:32.5700995-05:00
Why do you need a pistol if you can use a throwing knife?
ladiesman says2015-04-23T23:19:38.0583961-05:00
If you can throw a knife, you don't need a gun if you don't want one.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T04:51:56.2155439-05:00
But anybody can throw a knife, there is no need for pistols.
USN276 says2015-04-24T07:57:34.7022291-05:00
@ladiesman big pick up trucks have the capability of crushing small cars, and i will assure you, there are a lot of people on the road who don't need them. Should we make laws prohibiting people from owning pickup trucks when they don't need them? Also, did you know less than 10 homicides have been committed by full auto weapons since 1936?
USN276 says2015-04-24T17:47:48.7606553-05:00
@kreakin, you base this on what statistical evidence?
Kreakin says2015-04-24T17:50:55.4938523-05:00
Anecdotal only really, I'm sure there are plenty of reponsible owners but just a couple of people ruin it for everyone. When I say average Joe I mean someone who wants one on a whim and doesn't take it seriously.
USN276 says2015-04-24T17:54:05.9086729-05:00
@kreakin so before you said the average joe that wants it is the last person to trust with it, now it's only a couple? If people we can't trust buy these weapons, why do we hardly EVER hear stories of people with these full autos committing crimes with them? Can you explain? And can you also explain why you never got back to me on my "assault weapon" poll (the one about semi automatic rifles that LOOK like military rifles?)
Kreakin says2015-04-24T17:58:19.2386968-05:00
I didn't/ don't think there is any reasoning with you really, you sound angry as well. Angry, closed minded and with a gun is not a good combo. You just reinforce my opinion we would be safer banning them.
USN276 says2015-04-24T18:04:05.3269153-05:00
@kreakin nice, no counter argument, so you are left with the "you sound angry and close-minded " nonsense. You're closed minded buddy. You were the one who said people that buy full autos are the last people we can trust, but you have nothing to back that up, other than your emotional animosity for gun owners that want to have fun (even safely)
Kreakin says2015-04-24T18:09:07.9844554-05:00
I think I tried the evidence route last time, it fell on deaf ears so I'm not really inclined to waste my time again. Your confrontational attitude again just makes me question if you should have a gun at all, let alone an auto. Do you think you are the right person to own such a weapon?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T18:11:49.6356598-05:00
Kreakin, accusing USN276 of anger is fairly unfounded. It kind of reminds me of how briantheliberal responds to people with disagreements.
USN276 says2015-04-24T18:12:05.4252648-05:00
@kreakin actually, last time from what i remember, you tried to use the 1994 AWB as evidence an AWB works, when i actually showed you statistical evidence that the homicide drop began prior to 1994. Also, I even provided indisputable reasons as to why the homicide rate was actually down during the years of the AWB. For example, the unemployment rate was at an all time low. I provided these facts and you never responded because you were shut down. Maybe you can use this opportunity to counter this. And while your at it, explain how an AWB would have such a significant effect on the lives in mass shootings when the worst mass shooting in the world wasn't even committed by an "assault weapon"
USN276 says2015-04-24T18:13:39.3637950-05:00
@mathgeekjoe it's a defense mechanism when one is left with no arguments. You can tell Kreatin is out of arguments because he played the "you're getting angry" garbage
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T18:14:52.8449607-05:00
"@mathgeekjoe it's a defense mechanism when one is left with no arguments. You can tell Kreatin is out of arguments because he played the "you're getting angry" garbage" And now you are doing it. Briantheliberal does the exact same thing when someone doesn't feel like arguing.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T18:15:27.1386403-05:00
How about both of you try to respect the other, and maybe we can learn something about the other side.
USN276 says2015-04-24T18:51:54.6393806-05:00
@math stop trying to be the "smart" middle guy
Kreakin says2015-04-24T18:53:20.2689175-05:00
I changed my mind, guns are good. Can you shoot him please.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T19:02:09.0003378-05:00
Wait shoot me?
USN276 says2015-04-24T19:21:06.9885523-05:00
Oh lord, you're both pinheads.
USN276 says2015-04-24T19:21:53.1121379-05:00
And why is it this hard for you to reply to me kreatin?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T19:22:09.9730670-05:00
"Oh lord, you're both pinheads." Provide evidence for your claim.
Kreakin says2015-04-24T19:22:26.1157871-05:00
Was just kidding...
Kreakin says2015-04-24T19:23:59.7739892-05:00
Well, for a start you are to stupid to even spell my username right.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T19:31:06.6789074-05:00
I was waiting for kreakin to change his vote back to yes.
USN276 says2015-04-24T19:33:59.3096140-05:00
@math sure. You're a pinhead because you are incapable of figuring out who Kreakitin was talking about in regards to shooting someone. Kreakin is a pinhead because he can't make a coherent argument, never the less, a coherent response.
USN276 says2015-04-24T19:34:45.2073440-05:00
Oh, and Kreatin is also incapable of figuring out I'm playing a pun with his name further proving he is a pinhead
Kreakin says2015-04-24T19:35:19.9066340-05:00
Pun? Are you simple?
Kreakin says2015-04-24T19:38:25.5782048-05:00
Explain please.
USN276 says2015-04-24T19:43:23.1440283-05:00
@kreatin http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cretin It's a pun on the word "cretin" "kreatin" although obviously not spelled the same way, gives the same sounding word as "cretin". "Kreatin" is a pun off your name "kreakin" Please stop talking to me unless you want to actually make a legitimate argument against "assault weapons" AND my prior arguments
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T19:45:39.1925004-05:00
"Check the comments below if you are in doubt as to why they need to be controlled." Very mature action for a 44 year old.
Kreakin says2015-04-24T19:49:15.0822843-05:00
So it's not a pun, you are just calling me a cretin?
Kreakin says2015-04-24T20:04:15.0208531-05:00
And you wonder why I think you are unfit to own an automatic weapon? I think I'll bow out here before you come up with more insults.
USN276 says2015-04-24T20:54:05.0608199-05:00
Yup, you're right. I called you a cretin, therefore that should take my constitutional right of owning firearms away. You sound like a tyrannical dictator. Are you a control freak?
Kreakin says2015-04-24T20:57:11.0608122-05:00
I've passed this over to the mods, please do not insult me again it is a breach of the TOS.
USN276 says2015-04-24T21:23:14.1284318-05:00
Very manly Kreatin
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-29T09:26:34.2614043-05:00
"American taxpayers pay roughly $12.8 million every day to cover the costs of gun-related deaths and injuries— and that is a conservative estimate. Thats $229 Billion a year or $700 each." The poll is on automatic guns, not guns in general, it would be more valid to have given a statistic on the cost of full auto weapons.
