Cats have claws. If you are worried about your furniture, a cat may not be for you.

Humans shape their environment to suit them. I'm not that against it.

Reece - It really messes with them. A cat can have a fine life without them, but not "right". They are clawed beasts that want to hunt.

And murder us in our sleep! :d

@TBR don't worry. They'll keep evolving to live under our conditions.

Removing a bone from the cats toes is not going to get picked-up by evolutionary change reece.

I concur, TBR.

Genetic modification is part of the new "artificial selection."
reece says2015-05-27T14:53:31.5573333-05:00
It's still natural to me.
SamStevens says2015-05-27T14:54:48.3737029-05:00
Out can there be selection when cats are spayed and neutered based on the owner's decision?
SamStevens says2015-05-27T14:54:54.7698669-05:00
How*
reece says2015-05-27T14:56:59.0738541-05:00
@SamStevens The owner is selecting...
SamStevens says2015-05-27T15:01:32.4396633-05:00
What if the owner wishes to have a cat, but does not want kittens? They have removed a cat with smaller claws/toes from the gene pool.
reece says2015-05-27T15:09:53.1057205-05:00
@SamStevens yup, that's still selection.
SamStevens says2015-05-27T16:10:35.2038853-05:00
Reece: You are saying that cats will evolve smaller and smaller claws due to people declawing them?
reece says2015-05-27T17:18:04.6318047-05:00
@SamStevens No.
reece says2015-05-27T17:18:36.9130327-05:00
I said Genetic modification...
SamStevens says2015-05-27T17:19:42.3783117-05:00
Reece: Okay, we were arguing two different points.
reece says2015-05-27T17:22:51.8953724-05:00
I think you were arguing with the old form of "artificial selection."
SamStevens says2015-05-27T17:28:25.6828381-05:00
I was. I was holding the position that cats would not be able to evolve naturally, due to the pressures of clipping their toes, since people spay and neuter them. This position was based off of this article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/3322455/Why-elephants-are-not-so-long-in-the-tusk.html
