Do we need tougher gun control?

Not bans, but tougher gun control. Thing's like stricter background checks count.

  • Extra back ground checks will increase the difficulty of acquiring guns for unfit individuals. Now some may say that they'll just go to the black market, but thats the whole point of this, to get a gun, unfit individuals would have to purchase an illegal gun (more expensive), work with a blackmarket gun dealer (illegal), and if their caught with it, they will be arrested and charged.

  • It's better than doing absolutely nothing.

  • Prohibit the general populace from owning the more lethal firearms; assault rifles and get rid of the gun show loophole.

  • Of course we need more background checks and mental health evaluations. I do not agree with any bans on weapons or magazines though.

  • We need encouragement for everyone to be armed.

  • If a criminal wants to kill someone, they will find a way to kill that person. There will always be guns, and there will always be criminals. Criminals and terrorists can obtain guns and other weapons through illegal means, sometimes through the very government that outlawed them! There are only two solutions to this problem. First, we could eradicate guns from the Earth, discard all blueprints and mentions of firearms and wipe everyone's brain of any idea of a gun. Second, we could give law-abiding citizens (the only kind that would follow new gun control legislation) a fighting chance by arming them (or at least allowing them to be armed) as well as educating children about gun safety and how to use (and how not to use) firearms. Instead of using liberal dogmas like "stay away from guns" which will result in the next generation having no idea how to defend themselves against criminals, we could use common sense and teach them the power of a pistol and how to defend yourself (since reality dictates that nearly everyone will have to at some point).

  • The issue with recent shootings is not guns. What the media and so called experts seem to ignore is that most often these shooters have a mental health issues. It seems easier and cheaper to regulate guns rather than to expand metal health services, especially in schools. Cut budgets, cut budgets. Let’ solve problems by banning an object rather than giving people the treatment they need.

  • These shootings keep happening because of an unstable mental health system, the degradation of family values, and not enough funding for new federal agents. Plus, there is a great need for people in the NSA for cyber security and surveillance. Lastly, the new restrictions put on the FBI and the NSA don't help matters.

  • No matter what you do people will always find a way to gain and misuse guns. So people should have guns to protect themselves. Stricter gun control might prevent some people from obtaining guns to protect themselves.

  • I'd considering being for background checks, but there's a big problem with it. If you've smoked pot in a state where pot is illegal, you can't pass a background check. That's wrong and it needs to be fixed before background checks can be considered.

@Saberen - "There should be more background checks though" That is more gun control. No, its the gun-supporters that are adverse on name alone. Look at what has been proposed. A good majority support additional "gun control" and none of it is about taking away your guns.
tajshar2k says2015-10-03T19:16:09.0056212Z
@themightyindividual Your logic is mind-blowing. Since, criminals will get guns, we should just do nothing and let everybody get guns. Might as well live in an anarchy, not a civilized country.
themightyindividual says2015-10-03T19:21:02.7246465Z
To tajshar2k: If by "civilized" you mean "ignorance" then yes. Criminals will get guns, but I didn't say "do nothing about it". They should still have law enforcement and background checks but not concealed carry laws and such. Disarming law-abiding citizens is like clipping a birds wings.
themightyindividual says2015-10-03T19:22:27.2605046Z
To Peepette: Exactly. It is not guns that are causing the problem, it is people.
tajshar2k says2015-10-03T19:28:44.4442869Z
Background checks are gun control... I'm not some liberal idiot who supports banning guns, but somebody who supports taking common sense into gun legalization. Why do you want guns to be in the hands of people who shouldn't have them? With loose gun control, that is more likely to happen. Law Abiding citizens should have 0 problems with background checks if they trully are law abiding citizens. Tougher background checks, a improved mental health system is what America needs. This idea of everybody being armed is so stupid. Why do we pay taxes for police then? I should be able to walk outside freely without me worrying about being shot. I should need to be paranoid 24/7.

To tajshar2k: Yes, background checks could be considered gun control but for those who lawfully buy a firearm after passing a background check, they should get to carry them everywhere and not need (as in some places) a licence from the district attorney and a psychological evaluation.
tajshar2k says2015-10-03T19:44:07.0549728Z
If, that's the case, why are mentally ill people still getting guns legally? The Oregon shooter got his guns not from the black market, but from a Federal dealer.
themightyindividual says2015-10-03T19:47:13.2543797Z
You can't stop that from happening. If you took away the federal dealer, he could have still opted for the black market. What you could have done is arm the security guards in the schools the same way that the conservatives have been saying to for many years.
tajshar2k says2015-10-03T19:52:24.2490520Z
I not saying we take the federal dealer. I'm saying need to set stricter guidelines for all dealers, so they do a thorough job. We should make it a law for them to lose their license, if they do not follow all guidelines. Also, your 2nd point, have armed security guards, I agree 100%.
tajshar2k says2015-10-03T19:53:04.2170206Z
I thought Conservatives were arguing that teachers should be armed?

Here is some fun research from the Washington post:
komododragon8 says2015-10-03T20:20:49.7286540Z
Reece: I know right, they just assume that owning a gun automatically means you know how to use it or how to deal with a hostile intruder. In reality, people who don't have the proper training are far more likely to make a mistake. I remember that at the Oregon shooting one person did have a gun, however they did the right thing: retreat into the building and allow the professionals (SWAT and police) to do their job. Had he gone out looking for the shooter, he most likely would have distracted the police.
reece says2015-10-03T20:25:38.8722094Z
@komododragon8 Exactly. I watched him describe it. He seemed really collected in his thoughts.
tajshar2k says2015-10-03T21:17:58.1829796Z
@ladiesman What does more lethal firearms mean? All of them are lethal. If I shoot you with a shotgun in the head, it won't be any different than shooting you with a pistol
Haroush says2015-10-04T13:16:06.1632559Z
To add on in my comments.. A more stable economy would help out greatly too. Something Obama doesn't know how to improve.
triangle.128k says2015-10-04T13:31:22.4156758Z
@Haroush Right, we need a great stable ol' farmin' economy. Dem yankees be promotin' way 2 much business and urbanization. Dem farmers be growin dem economy waaay more.
Haroush says2015-10-04T13:38:47.6913092Z
More gun control is nothing but a far left agenda if you ask me. They only support facts contributing to their cause of eliminating guns all together from society. Though don't think they will tell you this, expect them to put on a front like leftist extremists like to do. They are like a snake stalking their prey, contemplating on the right time to attack.
Haroush says2015-10-04T13:44:45.3466166Z
Triangle, Their should be more American farmers and there is plenty of room to grow in the cities and suburbs already established. I see plenty of vacant warehouses and shopping centers that need to be filled up. There is plenty of houses needed to be bought too.
tajshar2k says2015-10-04T13:49:44.1868633Z
No, we just actually care when 5 year olds get shot, and want to fix it. We don't feel we should let mentally ill people get their hands on guns.
Haroush says2015-10-04T13:56:33.2735302Z
There is already laws in place for that. You say you care, but you say and do thingss based on your own motivations. Like I said before you all are like snakes hiding in the brush. You play on peoples' emotions and only use facts supporting your cause.
reece says2015-10-04T13:59:28.1372929Z
@Haroush Dude, you have some real problems.
tajshar2k says2015-10-04T14:01:15.5297581Z
"There is already laws in place for that." First of all, those laws clearly aren't doing much to prevent these mass shootings, and 2nd, Conservatives are trying their level best to get rid of those laws. I don't really care about your analogy. It doesn't make any sense to anybody. The same could be said about Conservatives when they need to invade the middle-east.
idoubtit says2015-10-04T15:25:39.1063327Z
Guns have always been around in this country, even more easily available than today, but these mass shootings are relatively newer and increasing. It's not the availability of guns that are the problem. Background checks are worthless when these shooters have no criminal record, and expanding background checks to anything beyond that should never be tolerated. It's no coincidence that these incidents have been on the rise simultaneously with 24/7 media vultures and an internet where anyone can post their manifesto. Automatically designating these people as mentally ill doesn't seem accurate either. More like they are full of anger for being ignored and not respected by anyone, and count on the media to help them change that.
reece says2015-10-04T15:37:33.0572356Z
@Haroush Conservatism in a nutshell.
Haroush says2015-10-04T15:42:03.7428035Z
The laws preventing mentally ill people from getting guns wasn't the problem here. The problem was the new laws preventing the FBI and NSA from doing their job stopping terrorist from killing innocent people. Likewise, the funding for new recruitment in the NSA, FBI, and ATF need to be increased.
triangle.128k says2015-10-04T15:44:53.3569294Z
NSA? Oh please, we don't need more people scavenging through everything we do online.
tajshar2k says2015-10-04T16:33:32.3741371Z
@Haroush What... Explain how that works again?
Haroush says2015-10-04T16:50:25.5685474Z
We don't need more people scavenging through what we do online? My question to that is why do you care? It is not like if you aren't doing something wrong someone is going to show up at your door. Only those who present a threat to others have possibility of federal agents at their door. @Triangle/ @Taj, Explain how what works? Speak up and be more specific!
MakeSensePeopleDont says2015-10-05T19:24:39.7424390Z
@komododragon8 -- You do know that a 9mm handgun costs about $50 on the street; .45 cal handgun goes for about $75-$100 depending on type. AK-47....A REAL AK-47, about $150-$200 on the street. Out of a store, a handgun will run you around $300-$1,200; an AK-47 will run you about $750-$1,500. If you walk across the southern border, your prices for street weapons drop to about $50 for an AK, get a supplier out of the middle east, you're looking at about $15....Yes that IS a 1 and a 5.
