  • In the UK, the EU legal immigrants are a problem! Especially the Romanians who think that they could get all UK benefits and do no work and live on the street!

  • I am one, so...

  • Why would I ever pick yes? There's no reason to dislike them. Especially in NZ, immigrants are almost always legal, there is almost no illegal immigration, since we're in the middle of a giant ocean, far from any land borders.

  • As long as they come here for a better life(work, freedom, etc) and don't start crime, then there is no issue.

  • No because they are legal. As long as they go though the proper steps of entering the country then I am fine with them.

  • Legal so that means they did a lot of things to immigrate to another country. However, if immigrants immigrate to another country in their senior age (65 above) or close to retirement age, then it is unfair to give them benefits because they have done little to nothing.

  • I have nothing against either, though we should try to discourage illegal immigration

  • Of course not. I welcome any who want to live in this country.

  • Why would I? They didn't break the law and they were seeking the American Dream. My ancestors came from Ireland during the potato famine.

  • Dont have anything against any immigrant.

Melting pot and what not.

It's not a melting pot if too many are coming over. Integration is extremely important, and why they call it a melting pot. The melting is a reference to integration, where they bring the best of their culture here, but still mostly identify with American culture. It's why illegal immigration is bad (not that they're bad just that American policy is bad), you want to control how many immigrants you take in, so you don't have the problems you have now. Many immigrants don't feel like Americans, and it's why you see Mexican enclaves, Asian enclaves etc. ideally, you'd want them to be among everybody and really feel like a part of the country, instead of locking themselves away. I mean can you ever really feel American, if you come from Mexico all your friends and family are Mexican, you live in an al Mexican community? Of course you can't. That's why you want to filter them in slower. They should be able to really feel American, and a lot of them do, but we still have integration issues and we really want to see close to 100% more closely identifying as American instead of identifying as Mexican. You can substitute Mexican for about 20 different other types of immigrants as well. Guatemalans, Haitians, Chinese, etc. all feel extremely isolated and it's a bad thing.

@Wylted - Integration is critical, I don't disagree. Even "controlling" the numbers - all good. Regardless, immigration is (has been) mostly positive for our country.

I think we should somewhat also be a mosaic rather than a melting pot. Its good if people can practice their own cultural beliefs, rather than doing everything the American way.

@tajshar2k I can understand people sticking to some of their beliefs, but extreme multi-culturalism in a large area wouldn't be practical. It wouldn't make sense if you go to one place where people do this, and in another place the culture is completely different.

I wouldn't see a problem with different culture in different states though, like culture in California is probably a bit different than in New Hampshire. But not having a unified culture in certain areas would lead to fragmentation and extreme individualism.

I see what your getting at, I talking about people having like cultural festivals, events, arts stuff like that. Its good if Americans learns about the cultures of other people. No harm in gaining more knowledge.

Just as an example, it's polite to slurp your soup in some Asian countries, so does that mean some people should slurp their soup despite the fact it's considered impolite?
triangle.128k says2015-08-05T16:59:31.0059245Z
@tajshar2k Oh, nevermind then.
tajshar2k says2015-08-05T17:01:18.9274163Z
No, I mean like if Indian people want to have some indian festival they should be encouraged to celebrate, they shouldn't feel like their way of life isn't tolerated. We should have more multi-cultural festivals too.

Just put the immigrants kids in a public school. That will integrate them just fine.
triangle.128k says2015-08-05T19:25:20.3185960Z
Too bad some people support homeschooling.
triangle.128k says2015-08-05T19:26:40.5967106Z
Public schooling teaches kids social skills, the immigrant kids won't know much about american culture if they stay homeschooled.
