Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?

Posted by: NewLifeChristian

I'm doing a debate on this, you can check it out here: http://www.debate.org/debates/Resolved-Recreational-marijuana-use-should-be-prohibited/1/

  • Yes, I support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes.

  • No, I do not support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes.

  • Absolutely.

  • hell yes i luv weed

  • Accountability of the individual. It's their decision, and we can make a profit from their decision.

  • It might not be good for you, but we imprison way too many people for Marijuana possession. Legalization would lower our incarceration rate, because we imprison more people than India and China despite our lower population.

  • It's roughly as bad for you as alcohol in the short run, and, depending on how often/how much alcohol is consumed, is often better for you than alcohol in the long run. Therefore, it's hypocritical to have alcohol legal for recreational use and not marijuana. Legalize it and tax the crap out of it. That way the people get what they want, law enforcement can focus on more important things, and we'll make a nice profit.

  • Because I oppose criminalizing something for injust reasons.

  • Yes, but not just Marijuana - all drugs and especially marijuana. I would rather we look at the treatment, instead of criminalizing it. Prohibition doesn't work, never has, and likely never will.

  • All drugs should be legal. The public has been made clear the dangers that drugs pose and so now it is just survival of the fittest.

  • Washington hasn't burned to the ground in a tidal-wave of stoner gone wild, I really don't see what the big deal is.

  • All drug laws are inherently unconstitutional. Why should Government dictate what I put into my body??? No drug is as dangerous as the Laws against them, no drug has the potential to decimate society on the scale of nuclear weapons so the Government really has no business outlawing certain vices while advocating and profiting from other vices. If they really cared about public safety, why not ban cars and alcohol!!??? What about the countless friends I've lost to drunk driving or overdosing on prescription medication!!!!!?????

  • Marijuana is a dangerous drug and should not be legalized. It has lead to many deaths, and by legalizing it, we'll just make the situation even worse. I encourage you to check out my debate. I've listed statistics and facts about the drug that might surprise you. You'll find out that marijuana isn't something to mess with.

  • Legalizing it means you are responsible for their condition of health, and I don't want that on my soul. There are better ways to take away stress. Try yoga.

NLC, Legalizing drugs has shown to actually decrease usage, since the "cool" factor is eliminated. And you haven't listed any facts.

The cops and prisons don't want it legal, what does that tell you. Making it legal would redistribute the power and wealth.

@tajshar2k Okay, then why has Colorado seen a spike in marijuana-related deaths, school suspensions, and other marijuana-related issues following its legalization? (https://www.Rt.Com/usa/316148-marijuana-related-deaths-injuries-study/)

@NewLifeChristian Do you support legal alcohol and tobacco? Marijuana might not be good for you, but it hasn't lead to any deaths what so ever.

@NLC, Interesting, I found a study that shows a decline in usage. https://www.drugpolicy.org/sites/default/files/Colorado_Marijuana_Legalization_One_Year_Status_Report.pdf

RT is actually a pretty reliable source too, so this is pretty interesting actually.

@triangle.128k I don't support legal alcohol or tobacco. I find it hypocritical to not be supportive of marijuana, yet be supportive of other drugs, such as alcohol and tobacco which have some of the same effects as marijuana.

@tajshar2k Well, the report published in Russia Today was done by the Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (RMHIDTA). It seems like a pretty reliable source; however, yours definitely does, too.

Several other countries have shown declines in legalizing drugs, so I'm for it. Also, I don't believe in banning something, just because I do not like it. Besides things like second hand smoking, I don't care what crap you put into your body.
NewLifeChristian says2016-02-13T16:46:54.8941790Z
@tajshar2k Neither do I. I don't think things should be illegal just because I don't like it. However, I do think things should be illegal if they hurt people. I actually do care what people put in their bodies. Sometimes people just don't know what's best for them, so that's why I believe marijuana should be illegal.

Do you care if families can't afford to pay their medical bills, and go bankrupt in our crappy healthcare system? Why do Conservatives care about issues that don't affect anybody, but when society is having issues, they bring out the personal responsibility card?
Heterodox says2016-02-15T14:18:54.9944866Z
@tajshar2k I don't know who you were talking to, so I will answer. Yes, I do care if people can't afford their medical bills. It makes me wonder why medical bills are so high, is there not enough competition, what is keeping the costs up, is there way more demand than supply, are people poorer now than they use to be, are people not saving for difficult times, etc. || What's a conservative? Are they all the same? What issues do they care about that don't affect anybody? What's wrong with personal responsibility?
tajshar2k says2016-02-15T14:31:53.1742749Z
That's the problem and something I can't even fathom. Why are you talking about supply and demand when healthcare might involve saving somebodies life? Talking from an economic perspective, a free market simply cannot function well in the healthcare industry. Demand will always be higher than supply, and when this happens, insurance companies will take advantage of it. Why? Because that's human nature. Countries like Switzerland (who are more free market than the U.S) have very regulated universal coverage for all its citizens. To answer your 2nd question, Conservatives want to mess with issues that pertain to an individuals morals. Like doing drugs, drinking, getting married, having abortion. I can understand abortion, since the argument is that it is murder, but the other issues have no impact whatsoever on others, yet they feel the need to regulate it. I disagree with that.
Heterodox says2016-02-15T14:41:09.2589194Z
@tajshar2k Well, then, using your definition of a conservative I am not sure I have ever met one. Because medical care is a service. It's someone's job. Similar to selling shoes at a shoe store.
tajshar2k says2016-02-15T14:42:45.1648543Z
So are police officers. A service doesn't have to be paid upfront. It can be funded by taxes.

@tajshar2k So, let me get this straight. You want to take a private industry, and make it a public one? I cannot tell you how much I disagree with this, for so many reasons, the very first reason would be that it's not the government's job to provide people with medical treatment. The second would be if it was the government's job the quality of care would likely suffer, the competitive nature would suffer (along with advancements), there would be a fixed rate of everything (doctors, hospitals, gloves, etc.) instead of whatever the markets demand.
mrfreedom says2016-06-03T02:59:09.7513407Z
They should legalize marijuana for medical and personal use because the government should not have any business in the that. What Thomas Jefferson says the government should not tell people what they could put in or not into our body. It's Freedom choice. We wasted enough tax money on pointless Wars on drugs. ,......,...........
