Does China really care about North Korea?

They're allies on paper, but do you think China actually gives a damn about them?

  • Yes, China cares about NK, as do the US, SK, Japan, Britain, France and any other country that has enough time to care about international issues...

  • There is no doubt. North Korea is notoriously crazy stupid. Kim Jong Il was a badass and a half, at least in his own mind. They pushed the boundaries for a long time but we kept them in check. However, we currently have a president, Obama, that is weak on military prowess. If that's not bad enough, Kim Jong Il died giving way to Kim Jong Un who feels he has to prove himself as a greater leader (or god) than his father. This combination has led to over confidence and a narcissistic psychopath bent on showing the west we need to fear him. They have done nothing but work on nuclear weaponization and ICBM research and development. In the recent past, with Kim Jong Il, China and NK had an agreement, now, even china doesn't trust that nut bag. My guess is that's one of the reasons for China's expansion into the Pacific. They see Obama is weak and won't protect our allies, Japan doesn't have a military because of our WWII agreement, who else is out there with the military power to deuce on NK hard and fast if they do something really stupid?

  • It cares about virtually all of its neighbors, to some extent.

  • I was always of the impression that China was just using NK as a buffer zone between them and staunch US ally SK. Though in recent decades China has been developing a closer relationship to the West, so NK is starting to become inconvenient (and a little annoying).

  • No country cares about each other - you cannot trust anyone nowadays.

@Diqiucun_Cunmin I mean in the sense whether they care about them as an ally.

@triangle: You mean whether China thinks NK is a valuable ally? I think so, since China actively calling meetings to discuss NK's nukes and such is a good way to establish China's role as an important player in international politics.

I've heard people saying that they just use North Korea as a "vassal" state or as a barrier state against US forces.
triangle.128k says2015-06-19T09:43:26.2866568-05:00
Why would China even see them as a valuable ally though? North Korea is pretty much a joke, their technology is so old so their military likely isn't that well.
Diqiucun_Cunmin says2015-06-19T09:44:45.2235552-05:00
@triangle: I know lol, their army still uses horses for goodness's sake. I did explain why NK is still useful above, though.

But what I meant in the poll is whether China cares about them as a country or whether they just use North Korea as a tool.
triangle.128k says2015-06-19T09:48:10.1802966-05:00
It seems to me as if China just uses North Korea as a tool.

@triangle: Of course they don't care *for* NK like a family member... I mean, in politics, you can ally with another country without giving a tinker's cuss about their people.

NK is a valuable ally. Especially on a regional level. Despite their teuchnology the country is pretty much a fortress. NK has the capability of wiping out 1/3 of South korea population in a day due to the size of the border artillery force. NK also has a huge military by manpower being larger (reserves included). NKs military is several times the size of America's and easily capable of defeating the demilitarized island of Japan. NK also has 20+ nukes. I think they make a valuable ally in the region.

@emporer1 Nothing in that post made any sense. Nearly all projects made thus far in a possible war with NK have shown that any initial damage the NK artillery does will be offset by allied bombing raids. They better try and kill that many people in the first day, because their will not be a second one. NK "larger" military is also poorly armed, supplied, and trained in modern day weaponry and tactics. A much smaller and more advanced force could easily deal with them. Japan is also one of the most powerful nations in the pacific with the 5th strongest navy in the world. And those 20 nukes that everyone keeps talking about are small (kiloton range) and very ineffective if we go of the whooping 3 tests that they have ever done with them. Add onto the fact that they have yet to develop a reliable delivery system, those nukes are almost harmless sitting in a warehouse somewhere, unable to ever reach a real target.

NK's nuclear weapons are easily capable of hitting Japan and a couple are supposed to be able to hit Hawaii. North Korea massive military may be poorly armed (technology wise) but the overwhelming numbers would be enough to capture much of South korea. NK has a million man standing army on the border of South korea ready and able to strike. NK also has a sizeable (while technologically behind) submarine force. NK could conquere SK and hold it for a period of time until a large enough US respons can be brought in. NK creates a good buffer and another problem for the west which helps out China militarily. That is all I'm saying.
triangle.128k says2015-06-19T13:22:56.2335357-05:00
South Korea's military alone without backup from US forces would easily defeat North Korea. The technology of North Korea is so freaking old, the higher numbers really won't account for it.
triangle.128k says2015-06-19T13:26:52.1571826-05:00
If North Korea even tries dropping their nukes, they are doomed to fall by enemy forces invading.
PetersSmith says2015-06-19T14:47:57.9226402-05:00
It'd be awesome if China let us invade North Korea from the north.
triangle.128k says2015-06-19T15:03:17.2785228-05:00
China wouldn't care if we invade North Korea. All China does is make a tool out of them.
58539672 says2015-06-20T21:01:10.3669474-05:00
@emorer1 North Korea has no submarine force worth mentioning. They don't even have enough fuel to run their fleet and air force (both of which are dreadfully out of date) for any extended length of time. And as for their nukes... NK has no long or medium range missiles to deliver they nukes, so Hawaii and Japan are completely out of their reach. And their short range missiles have a very poor record. Remember that satellite they tried to launch a few years ago that never made it off the ground. Current estimates give them a 60% or so success rate (though until we examine them ourselves Id give that a 15% wiggle room). So lets say they fire those 20 nukes. Based off their rockets, expect only 12 or so to actually work. 12 missiles is completely within SK capabilities to shoot down with reliable results. Given modern missile defense systems, even 20 missiles can be dealt with. So I repeat, nothing you are saying makes sense.

@PetersSmith Interestingly enough, Nk has been increasing their artillery presence along the Chinese/NK boarder. Maybe they know something we don't.

Shame that communist revolutions tend to create countries like North Korea.
