Does the Bible specifically condemn same-sex marriage?

Posted by: briantheliberal

Not homosexuality or homosexual behavior, actual marriage between two people of the same sex. Is this actually mentioned in the Bible itself? Note: The Bible claiming that marriage is between a man and a woman doesn't count as actually condemning same sex marriage.

  • Yes, the Bible condemns same-sex marriage (Please provide specific verse)

  • No, the Bible does not condemn (or mention) same-sex marriage

  • Read Leviticus 20:13

  • I read the bible, and it specifically says that homosexuality is condemned.

  • Romans 12:2 Says: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 1:26-27 says: "For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error." Leviticus 20:13 says: "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them." Mark 10:6-9 says: "...from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” 4 different sections, old and new testament. Genesis proclaims that it is not good for man to be alone, I shall make a helper for him. And he created the female from Adam named Eve. A man and a female; both made in God's image. And God said it was good. We know that God's plan is not for Homosexuality; it is for the life of fertility and love of 2 different genders. The corrupt society today, even some members of the Christian Church, believe that being Gay is not wrong because people should what they want to do. This is hypocritical of course, as they rebuke those in favor of family values. To quote Job 20:5 "That the exulting of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment?" The world may be enamored now, the word of the Lord stands forever. His laws and his ways are greater than our own. In 50 some odd years, the Church might well be fighting groups that advocate adding new books to the Bible or something stupid like that. The Bible is clear; those who disagree mostly quote Jesus and Paul for saying 'love your neighbor as yourself'. Yes, we must everyone as we all commit sin and are imperfect. However, this does mean that we should support groups that intentionally commit sin. Sin is wrong, and letting people what they want without morale remorse is exactly what the Bible says is wrong. If I want to start stealing things from jewelry stores, I shouldn't get to just because I want to and I have a right to make choices.

  • Since the bible also specifies that sex is part of marriage, I think it's a given that same-sex marriage is as taboo as same-sex sex.

  • yes it does condemn it. I am not against homosexuality I am bisexual myself so don't think I am and I'm not a Christian but I know for a fact that the bible says that it an abomination.

  • 1st Corinthians 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality

  • (1Corinthians 6:9,1-1)"Or do you not know that unrighteous people will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Do not be misled. Those who are sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who submit to homosexual acts, men who practice homosexuality, 10 thieves, greedy people, drunkards, revilers, and extortioners will not inherit God’s Kingdom. And yet that is what some of you were. But you have been washed clean; you have been sanctified; you have been declared righteous in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God."

  • Ephesians 5:25 Husbands love your wives, 1 peter 3:7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, 1 Corinthians 7:3 , each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband, Colossians 3:19 Husbands, Love your wives, and do not be harsh with them, Ephesians 5:28, Ephesians 5:22, Ephesians 5:31, Ephesians 5:33, Proverbs 18:22, Proverbs 31:10, 1 Timothy 3:2, 1 peter 3:1, Gen 3:16, Titus 1:6, Titus 2:5, Matthew 5:32, Matthew 19:4-6, Ecclesiastes 9:9, The bible is the living word of God, an instruction manual of sorts to express God’s will for mankind. What you will find here is verse after verse after verse that instructs husbands and wives, how to conduct themselves and the roles they have been assigned in the family unit. Take note that not once is there ever given instruction on how husbands are to act with husbands, or wives with wives. If God condoned same sex relations, why is it not mentioned once in his word? Husband in the original Hebrew is Aner meaning a man (properly as an individual male) and wife gune meaning a woman; specifically a wife. These are not just titles but gender definitions. Yes the bible does not specifically come out and say that homosexual marriage is unacceptable, this is because God has already made his view on homosexual practices clearly known, as are his reasons for instituting the bonds of marriage. Your wording and handicaps for this pole cause a huge bias in the answers (but you knew that when before you asked). It would be akin to asking a scientist to explain evolution without fossils.

  • Absolutely! Besides the story of Sodom and Gommorah, the Old Testament says “You must not have sexual relations with a man as you would a woman. That is a hateful sin." The New Testament says "Do not be fooled. Those who sin sexually, worship idols, take part in adultery, those who are male prostitutes, or men who have sexual relations with other men, those who steal, are greedy, get drunk, lie about others, or rob—these people will not inherit God’s kingdom."

  • I agree that the bible may condemn same-sex marriage, but it also says love thy neighbor. I do believe that it also specifically says that it is up to Him to judge, not us. You may disagree, but if you were a true Christian, you would also know that it is not for YOU to judge and condemn another being.

  • Leviticus 20:13 1 Corinthians 11:9 and others... I have not found anything truly against same-sex MARRIAGE yet, except the 1 Corinthians scripture which simply says woman is for man. But homosexuality/same-sex sexual relations are clearly forbidden. But I think people are just really trying to be technical. In marriage, people have sex/intimate relations. I assume it's the same in same-sex marriages. Thus, same-sex marriages/gay marriages are actually forbidden.

  • Condemn Homosexuality: Leviticus 18:22 Romans 1:26-27 1 Corinthians 6:9 Gods Plan for Marriage: Genesis 2:24 1 Corinthians 7:2-16 Ephesians 5:23-33

  • romans 12:2

  • Romans 1:26-27

  • It specifically condemns homosexuality, and it does not allow for the consideration of same sex marriage as even a question, as marriage in the Bible is defined as something that can only be formed through a conjugal relationship between a man and a woman.

    Posted by: K8
  • The bible does say that homosexual acts are condemned, but it says nothing directly about gay marriage.

  • Those who use the Bible to justify their opposition to marriage equality obviously haven't read it, or haven't read it carefully. The Bible doesn't say that homosexuals shouldn't be allowed to marry, it says that homosexuals shouldn't be allowed to breathe. Unless one agrees that the punishment for homosexuality should be death, they should not use the Bible to justify their bigotry. They simply are not bigotting on a Biblical scale.

  • Not marriage specifically.

  • Please regard my arguments in this debate.

PetersSmith, I remember reading about that from an article written by a religious philosopher who argued that the quotes in the Bible that many Christian today claim condemn homosexuality itself were heavily flawed and mistranslated in comparison to the "original" ancient Greek and Hebrew texts which were in reference to pagan practices. It's an interesting concept but I doubt most who have been taught to dislike homosexuality because of their religion would ever consider it, it's too ingrained in their culture.

@briantheliberal The bible doesn't specifically say anything, it's all up for interpretation sorry.

It does say to have kids, and it does condemn homosexual activity, so even though it may not specifically say "gay marriage" is wrong, it would seem that same-sex marriage is not in accordance with the Bible's prescribed behaviors of right and wrong.
reece says2015-10-08T07:10:58.4059367Z
@Teaparty1 What does it mean by having kids? Does adopting count? It's all about interpretation you see.
briantheliberal says2015-10-08T21:05:03.5766379Z
Right, what about heterosexual couples who are unable to conceive, are they sinning too? I think the Bible tells women to sleep with their husband's brother if I am not mistaken.

@Haroush What's up with the "G-d"? Is there a rule somewhere against spelling the word "god"? (Commandment #614?) God isn't a name or even a specific being. It's a category of thing, like automobile, fairy, or cheese. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. There are/have been at least 2800 gods throughout history. Everything one does likely pisses at least one of them off.

@briantheliberal, good points. Also Pope Francis recently said "who am I to judge?" If the Pope can communicate with Jesus, that would mean Jesus doesn't care if gays get married. It's 2015 and this is an issue we should all be on the same side of.

MizzEnigma says2015-10-19T18:38:48.4188400Z
Not one of those verses mentioned marriage. "Man who lays with man shall not marry" nothing of the sort. Not one verse. All those do is condemn the acts - man laying with man, woman with woman - but not marriage. Marriage is the assumed factor, not the proven.
Haroush says2015-10-19T22:12:17.4339846Z
Commonsense tells you if you aren't to lay with them, then you aren't to marry them. Plus, Paul makes it even more clear in Romans.. If your comprehension is that low you shouldn't be living.
TBR says2015-10-19T22:21:25.5208712Z

MizzEnigma says2015-10-19T23:11:08.8126723Z
Common sense? Have you . . . Read this poll? Actually read the question? It isn't about common sense or assumptions, it's about specifics. "Does the Bible SPECIFICALLY condemn same-sex MARRIAGE." Specific: Clear or detailed in communicating. If you have to use "common sense" it isn't clear or detailed. Is your comprehension low, sir? If you can't even understand a question, you shouldn't be replying. In none of the given verses does it say that same-sex marriage should be condemned.
SongHaGin says2015-10-19T23:13:14.3326861Z

TBR says2015-10-19T23:17:28.2899698Z
Compression of the question has nothing to do with opinion. Do you have a verse that makes ssm wrong? Not the act of sex, the institution of marriage?
SongHaGin says2015-10-19T23:18:22.9222204Z

@SongHaGin If you think that the government should be involved in pushing your religious agenda on the rest of society, it is indeed a political stance. If it were merely your religious opinion that homosexuality and marriage equality are wrong, all you would have to do to satisfy your religious opinion is not engage in homosexual activity and not marry someone of the same sex. As soon as you feel that the government should get involved in legislating your religious opinion, it becomes a political opinion.

Dpowell says2015-10-29T17:21:02.9247273Z
For those of you who said yes, you obviously haven't read the bible. If one truly reads the bible, they'd notice that the bible isn't talking about homosexuality and the one time it mentions it, it's when Jesus is defending a homosexual couple. There is not a single part of the bible that specifically condemns homosexuality or says it's bad in any other way.
BaxterDebate says2015-10-30T10:31:17.1168417Z
@Dpowell You need to read THE Bible Sir. The “one time” you mentioned is found in Matthew 8:5-13 specifically the word Servant or Pais in the original Greek. The homosexual community states that this word (at the time of this writing) was slang for young boy who is a sex slave. The word when used, and when used more than 20 times in the bible, never once takes it in that context. The writer was not known to use slang of that era in any of his writings. “If one truly reads the bible,” they would find that παῖς or país means: Short Definition: a boy or girl child. Full Definition: -- a male child, boy, -- a male slave, --servant; thus: a servant of God, especially as a title of the Messiah, -- a female child, girl. Calling it "gay Marriage" doesn't make sense. Marriage is meant far a man and a woman. It would be better if it was Called union, of something like that.

To the guy boogish who voted No. Maybe you voted the wrong one because the question is whether the Bible condemns homosexuality, But instead you vote no and say the bible pretty much condemns homosexuality....

Also for those wanting a verse that shows homosexuality is a no go in the bible: Levictus 18:22. I am not gonna say word for word because firstly im too lazy to search it up, secondly I dont want to give false info. However it states that a man who lies with another man as if he was female is comparable to an abomination.

@Stonehe4rt - The question is not whether the Bible condemns homosexuality, it's whether the Bible specifically condemns same sex marriage (it's right there in the title and description). The Bible does not say that homosexuals should not be allowed to marry. It says they should not be allowed to live. Like I said in my comment, of you don't think that homosexuals should be publicly executed for being homosexuals, you are not following the Bible. A baker who refuses to bake a cake for a same sex wedding is not being a good Christian. They're just being bigots and trying to justify it somehow.

@ Boognish Well firstly, we both can see Homosexuality is indeed a sin in the bible. It may not say anything about homosexual marriages but that is because it is not bibically possible to marry as homosexuals. A marriage is a symbolization of God, the Church(Faith\Salvation) and finally the Children (Us). Also a symbol of the Holy trinity, Jesus stated something like that the Man should love his Wife, like Jesus loves the Church. And Women should respect the Man like the Faith respects God. Jesus says many things for married couples to learn and grow with, however he does not state anything towards Homosexuals. This is because a homosexual "Marriage" Is not a marriage. It is a "Union" that forces Priest to say that they bless it and God approves. If anything, Homosexual "marriage" is more of an attack on Christianity. The second attack Homosexual group has made. First they took the Rainbow (God's Promise to Man.) Now the attack Marriage. Many homosexuals call people "haters" but if anyone has a different view then them, than that person is "homophobic". Anyhow it may be off topic where I am getting, but no Christian can support a same-sex marriage because even if people like to say it is a "marriage" it is not. It never will because Two Men would represent Two Gods but no Faith or way to salvation, which would only hurt others. Two Women would represent Two Faiths but no God, which is pointless and doesnt really achieve anything. Really the homosexual marriage does show the symbolic form of the two homosexuals. If they are women, no one is getting hurt but there is no point behind it, as two wall plugs cant plug into each other. And with homosexual men you can see only bad things will happen there, You cant shove a plug into another plug, you will break them. Trying plugging in at a different location and you will break a hole in the object.... Lol

Also about the Bible saying to have them all dead. It also said that about Rapist and the like. However that was the Old Testament when the punishment for Sin was Death. That was a clear law in the past. However Jesus came in the bible and I guess you could say God found a loop hole in his own law and exploited it for our benefit. A badass move that even the Devil didnt expect. However God came down in the flesh of man, and died a life without sinning once. By doing this he exploited the loop hole of Sin = Death and put our sins upon him. Hence why no one has to die for their sins, as long as you want forgiveness, Jesus gives it. He then takes your sin and its consequences himself. Christians are called Christians because they are suppose to act like Jesus, or try to. By no means should we ever hate Homosexuals themselves. However the Act itself is evil and an abomination, just as murder or even something we see as small like lying. Some are easier not to do, somethings harder. However every sin is equal, (except defiling and cursing the Holy Spirit, I think that was called Blasphemy. And maybe the harm of children, I remember it was said that, If anyone of you bring harm to a child or bring them down the wrong path, then you are better off tying a stone around your neck and drowning in a lake instead of facing God. Not word for word but yeah.) However just like everyone else, we all sin. Homosexuals should not be condemned, however the act of homosexuality is indeed condemned. Blessing it at a marriage would in a way be Blasphemy.... Because that would be saying God approves of a sin which is a complete lie and tarnishes the reputation of God. That is why I often use the phrase. Love the People, Hate the Evil. Because that is what Christians should do, love everyone even when they wrong us, but hate the act of evil itself and try to get rid of such evil. If you see someone who claims to be Christian but yet judges everyone else, and speaks words of hatred towards them, than that is not Christian. However Christians should not have to approve or participate in the aid of sin. Such as baking a cake for something you know is sinful. I wouldnt want to bake a cake to celebrate the murder or rape of someone. It is no different than baking a cake for homosexuals. You may see it as extreme to compare homosexuality to murder, however a small lie is also equal to murder, we all do it. We all are guilty, hence why Jesus died, for us.
