Emotion vs Logic.

Posted by: Mathgeekjoe

You and another person are in a dangerous situation. If you try to save yourself, you have a 1/2 chance of surviving but the other person is guaranteed to die (logical). If you try to save yourself and the other person, the probability you both die is 5/6, but you have a 1/6 probability that both you and the other person survives (emotional).

  • Logical choice, highest expected value of somebody surviving

  • Emotional choice, you give the other person a chance of surviving

Typo on the logical choice. Highest expected value of people surviving.

Expected value for logical choice is .5 people surviving. Expected value for emotional choice is 1/3 people surviving.

What about just saving the other person? What kind of choice is that?

It would be a logical and selfless choices, the ultimate combination of logic and emotion.

Mathgeekjoe: And why isn't that an option?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-15T21:11:59.4997493-05:00
Because it would A, make the poll too easy, and B, it wouldn't be a face off.

Reece, what is wrong with the description that makes you not want to vote?

To thoroughly evaluate the situation, you need time to calm down and not let instincts kick in.

So your are not making a decision? You still have "I wouldn't of voted if I saw the description." in the logical choice column.

I'm not making a decision...

Reading the scenario, either choice could be logical, depending on your values. Most of the time I'm going to risk my life to save another. I've unfortunately had to make those decisions a couple of times. I have a very selfish philosophy, so I don't know why self preservation goes out the window, when others are in danger, but unfortunately it does

It doesn't stipulate....Do i like the other person?

The other person you cannot have any negative feeling towards. You either are neutral towards the person or you are positive towards them, choose which ever says the most about you.
