My mother is from Iran (and so are her many, many cousins, aunts, and uncles, as well as her mother and father). Iranians pronounce it EE-RAHN. I try to get people to say EE-RAHN because it is correct and Iranians appreciate it when people pronounce it correctly. This debate is similar to Columbia vs. Colombia, Brazil vs. Brasil, and other debates over country names. My policy is to say it how the natives say it. It's their country, after all.
There's a "rough" r sound in Iran that's not usually pronounced in English.
This is the correct way to say it.
Have fun sounding like retards to the rest of the world, kids.
I've got to be honest here. Even though I'm sure it isn't the correct pronunciation, that's just the way I've always said it.
What Vox said.
Who cares if I say it wrong? I also say candidate wrong. It's can-di-date, and I say can-i-date
It starts with "I" and ends with "ran". What's so hard about that?
Mighty is right, it's EYE-ran not EE-ran. That just sounds wrong.
