It's the lack of a religious belief
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T08:59:23.5724265-05:00
Is the super general definition of atheism a belief, no. Does the majority of self proclaimed atheist have at least a minor belief there is no god, yes.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T09:00:26.1828323-05:00
@uglie-boy, it isn't the lack of religious belief, based on definition it is just the lack of a belief that there are any gods. You can still be atheist and have a religious belief.
Gas says2015-05-08T09:06:15.1541516-05:00
It may not be an "organised" religion, but an atheists beliefs are just as likely to affect their choices and overall outlook on life as a theists beliefs.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T09:08:00.5959034-05:00
@Gas, that is only self proclaim atheist. Keep in mind that the term atheism is so general that it includes people who don't even know what theism and atheism is.
Diqiucun_Cunmin says2015-05-08T09:13:32.8526089-05:00
@Mathgeekjoe, I think the definition of religion is more relevant here. I think religion has certain properties that should be satisfied - for example, it should have a central doctrine, and maybe a belief that isn't founded entirely on rational observations/deductions. You may have a different definition for religion, and thus think atheists are religious. BTW, just curious: I'm an apatheist. Would you consider me religious?
Gas says2015-05-08T09:17:38.5457389-05:00
@Mathgeekjoe. I Include all atheists in that statement, whether they identify themselves as one or not. Whether you believe in God/Gods/higher powers, or not, undoubtedly affects all of our decisions and choices.
MrFox says2015-05-08T09:18:19.5007893-05:00
@mathgeekjoe did you ask them? Or are you repeating religious propaganda, meant to demonize atheists?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T09:19:11.4093207-05:00
@MrFox, it isn't hard to prove that your average atheist has at least a minor belief there is no god.
Gas says2015-05-08T09:20:34.6783710-05:00
I should also add, I think that everyone has religious beliefs, although not all may choose to follow or support organised religion. @Diqiucun_Cunmin, I would suggest that you may not identify yourself as religious, but you certainly have some religious belief.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T09:26:42.9611020-05:00
@MrFox, do you want me to prove how I know your average atheist has at least a minor belief there is no god?
Diqiucun_Cunmin says2015-05-08T09:31:02.6557626-05:00
@Gas: I don't know or care if there is God, and my actions would not be affected by the existence or non-existence of God. Do you think that's religious?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T09:40:02.3221406-05:00
@Diqiucun_Cunmin, doesn't finding the existence of a god irrelevant not impact your beliefs and actions in some way?
Diqiucun_Cunmin says2015-05-08T09:44:11.0829298-05:00
@Mathgeekjoe: Ummm... But isn't that a lack of an impact, rather than an impact?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T09:51:01.5705166-05:00
So you consider that you only have a lack of impact? Has not your viewpoint caused you to view something differently because of you consider it irrelevant?
retrogamer176 says2015-05-08T09:55:16.6030620-05:00
@mathgeek How do you define religion? I define it how the oxford dictionary describes it: The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods
Diqiucun_Cunmin says2015-05-08T09:59:44.4949361-05:00
@Mathgeekjoe: If 'differently' means 'change', then I think not. My parents are non-religious (yet not atheist); my society is highly secular. I've never had my actions affected by God before.
Gas says2015-05-08T10:04:44.6687448-05:00
@Diqiucun_Cunmin, firstly, your apathy will have affected your outlook on life, which then affects decision making. Secondly, although you have every right to say that right NOW you don't believe either way, it would be naive to suggest that if you did or didn't believe in a God, your life and actions wouldn't change. Religion is often described as a relationship between man and god, and all relationships affect our perceptions. You can not suggest that if you had different friends, been taught by different teachers or had different parents, your opinions and choices would be exactly the same either way. Belief in God, or lack of, works in exactly the same way.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T10:06:11.9594834-05:00
Definition according to dictionary reference. "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe...And often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs"
Mathgeekjoe says2015-05-08T10:11:09.4320776-05:00
In a way you could call political affiliation a religion.
mdmark says2015-05-14T12:03:16.7084294-05:00
I love @Applestoapples comment on the poll. "They think that their god is science even though it's really not." The reason we are atheist is because we don't believe in a spiritual being that rules over all, not because we worship science. That is called scientology.
retrogamer176 says2015-05-14T12:24:00.9813435-05:00
@mdmark scientology is a cult, not a religion.
mdmark says2015-05-14T13:50:06.1441837-05:00
@retrogamer My point exactly
retrogamer176 says2015-05-16T23:27:16.0690646-05:00
@mathgeekjoe uhh, no it's a disbelief that there is a god. @applestoapples that's called scientology, not atheism. And scientology is a cult. @jacksunmadness faith is belief without evidence. Atheists tend not to beleive anything without evidence. They don't have faith. @logical.Assasinator you should still acknowledge that it's not a religion.
Ryian says2015-05-19T00:16:34.7247945-05:00
It isn't a religious belief, but I think it requires more faith than a religious belief.
retrogamer176 says2015-05-19T00:24:42.2715734-05:00
@ryian Dude, atheism is a lack of "faith". How can lacking faith, require faith? I am an atheist and, I gotta tell ya, I don't rely on any sort of "faith" to get through the day.
ooberman says2015-05-27T21:12:41.1093589-05:00
Atheists may be religious (Humanist, Brights, Buddhist, et al), but atheism is not a religious belief.
Midnight1131 says2015-05-27T21:50:38.0501405-05:00
Ryian, that's crazy. Atheists definitely don't require "more faith" than religious people. You don't have "faith" that nothing is there.
