Is homophobia and heterosexism a sin?

Posted by: Kreakin

"We must now have the courage to take the final step and call homophobia and heterosexism what they are. They are sin. Homophobia is a sin.Heterosexism is a sin. Shaming people for whom they love is a sin," Dean of Washington's National Cathedral, Rev. Gary Hall

  • Doesn't God want us to love our neighbours?

  • religion is like a gigantic organism and has in the past evolved to fit popular opinion on many occasions, before long homophobia will be looked down on by the church

  • Sin? who are we to decide? All men are equal and have a right to decide who they would choose to be with.

Bias poll because of the pictures.
Kreakin says2015-04-22T18:00:04.0706372-05:00
Go on...
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:01:05.8470332-05:00
Go on what? I just made a statement, this is a bias poll according to the pictures.
Kreakin says2015-04-22T18:03:23.7363171-05:00
Ok, how so then? I don't see the bias.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:05:20.4163902-05:00
I am fairly sure you are being sarcastic. If you aren't, then I mildly question your intelligence.
Kreakin says2015-04-22T18:06:42.4191907-05:00
You mean you can't explain the bias and are resorting to insults?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:07:51.3560326-05:00
Ok I will explain it if you need to know. The poll is bias because someone may want to vote "no" but doesn't agree with the picture.
Kreakin says2015-04-22T18:09:43.6377413-05:00
But thats a picture of a homophobic Christian. Seems a fair representation to me.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:11:39.7323189-05:00
Somebody can have an irrational fear of something without resorting to words of hate. I would say the photo is of a hateful homophobic person.
Kreakin says2015-04-22T18:13:27.7721891-05:00
Perhaps you just don't like the association as it isn't comfortable.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:15:40.6850411-05:00
It would be misleading. It is similar to showing a picture of a terrorist when the choice is islam. Not all muslims are terrorist, not all homophobes are hateful.
Kreakin says2015-04-22T18:17:02.1019630-05:00
Homophobe noun ho·mo·phobe \-ˌfōb\ : a person who hates or is afraid of homosexuals or treats them badly
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:17:40.3759759-05:00
Source for your definition.

Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:18:57.3407499-05:00
Do you know how to read?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:20:04.6946774-05:00
Wait, typed in the wrong word.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:21:36.2242302-05:00
I typed in homophobia. Got a different definition than homophobe.
Kreakin says2015-04-22T18:21:37.7218686-05:00
Back to petty insults? I thought you were above that... Obviously not. I'm going to leave you with your homophobic opinion as you are clearly not able to have a sensible conversation. L
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:23:00.5142605-05:00
I thought you were paraphrasing to your own opinion " irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals" This was the definition of homophobia.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:24:24.5987995-05:00
But your definition isn't the full definition of merriam-webster.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:26:31.7084143-05:00
Full definition of homophobe, is a person characterised by homophobia.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:27:00.7246003-05:00
So a person characterised by " irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals"
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:29:57.0681307-05:00
So what do you have to say about the full definition?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:43:55.1335839-05:00
I have a question, do you mind if I make a poll where people pick between the two definition by merriam websters about homophobe.
Mister_Man says2015-04-22T18:51:39.8012815-05:00
From what I can tell, mathgeek, saying yes, it is a sin, means you don't want people to be homophobic, so the picture fits just perfectly. Saying no, it isn't a sin, means it's okay to be homophobic, so the picture fits well. It is kind of confusing at first lol
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:53:10.7186643-05:00
Is arachnophobia a sin?
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-22T18:55:17.5630774-05:00
Homophobia can be defined as an irrational fear of homosexuals. Is it a sin to have an irrational fear?
briantheliberal says2015-04-23T14:57:50.8160303-05:00
Mathgeek, homophobia is an irrational fear of, aversion to or intense hatred of homosexuals or homosexuality. Gay bashing is a form of homophobia. If you vote no that means you don't think people who wrongfully assault, judge or hate gay people should be held accountable for their actions by God, who does state in the Bible that no one who is without sin shall throw the first stone.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T21:06:07.7666526-05:00
"wrongfully assault, judge or hate gay people" These in of their selves are sins.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T21:11:16.8358338-05:00
Irrational fear, or aversion to, or treats them badly. Neat thing is that with the or, someone could be a homophobe with out aversion or mistreatment of homosexuals. Last time I checks, fear of something wasn't a sin. Calling homophobia a sin is like saying being a rectangle is a sin because squares are sinful.
Kreakin says2015-04-24T21:13:55.7219487-05:00
Homophobic or homophobia here is meant in the dicriminatory use of the word.
Kreakin says2015-04-24T21:15:41.8624710-05:00
The sin is shaming people for whom they love.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-24T21:19:35.0334513-05:00
"Homophobic or homophobia here is meant in the dicriminatory use of the word." Why couldn't you have said that like 30 comments ago? Seems weird that you just decided to specify what meaning of the word you are using 30 comments latter?
Kreakin says2015-04-25T07:25:00.6880330-05:00
Well it seemed pretty obvious...Sorry though.
