Is if good for music (music education, performance, composition, history) to be offered in higher education?

This speaks on two fronts: 1) Whether or not music is beneficial to college students as a vocational pursuit or university/college-promoted organization/community; 2) As a minor, 4-year major, or graduate degree (or any number of the aforementioned).

As in operated by the university itself, but not offered as a degree necessary or applicable for credit hours and graduation.

As in one (or many) that is/are operated by students and/or persons outside of a university's student and faculty body, and recognized/certified by the university, although not operated by the university itself.
