Defense against what? Baloney? As far as I understand it (which may not be perfectly), it's more of a principle - that in the absence of any better information, the most likely explanation for something is the simplest one. I don't consider it infallible (there are undoubtedly cases where the simplest answer isn't the correct one), but I think as a guiding principle it's certainly useful.
