All discipline has to be appropriate to the infraction, the child's age, and other environmental factors. A good rule of thumb is three strikes: the first offense should be corrected by a mild reproof and an explanation on why the child should not do it. The second offense should be met with a stern rebuke and a timeout (i.E., make the child sit down for 10 minutes). The third and all subsequent offenses should be met with a spanking, 20 minutes on timeout, and a stern rebuke
