Is the Bible a factual reference?

Posted by: Shikyo

While I'm a Christian and read the Bible. But the Bible was written a good time after the events took place. So what do you think? Is the bible a reliable resource.

  • Of course it's reliable

  • Well you never know for certain

  • A lot of things in the Bible have been proven via other sources. Faith aside, this makes me consider it a historical account. We have no guarantee that any source is completely accurate. However, we know that some sources are more accurate than others time & again.

  • If the Bible was not a religious text it would be the most important historical work ever written because it was been preserved so well since the time it was written (And yes I know it was written at different times and put together). Since it is a religious text people don't want to offend non-christions or Jews with the new testament by citing it.

  • Yes, it has proven to be the worlds most reliable history book through thousands of years of scrutiny. But don't take my word for it: "Through the wealth of data uncovered by historical and archaeological research, we are able to measure the Bible's historical accuracy. In every case where its claims can thus be tested, the Bible proves to be accurate and reliable." - Dr. Jack Cottrell, The Authority of the Bible (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1979), pp. 48-49. "Archaeology has confirmed countless passages which have been rejected by critics as unhistorical or contradictory to known facts......Yet archaeological discoveries have shown that these critical charges.....are wrong and that the Bible is trustworthy in the very statements which have been set aside as untrustworthy.....We do not know of any cases where the Bible has been proved wrong." - Dr. Joseph P. Free, Archaeology and Bible History. Scripture Press, Wheaton, IL, 1969, pg. 1 "Luke is a historian of the first rank; not merely are his statements of facts trustworthy; he is possessed of the true historic sense...In short this author should be placed along with the very greatest of historians." - Sir William Ramsey (archaeologist), The Bearing of Recent Discovery on the Trustworthiness of the New Testament, 1915, pages 81, 222

  • The Bible is completely reliable. So many of its claims have been verified and none have been refuted. The existence of countless biblical cities have been discovered through excavation. The existence of many biblical people have also been discovered this way. Hundreds of prophecies regarding people, kingdoms, world events, etc... have been fulfilled. This is the most heavily scrutinized book in the world and has not been proven wrong in anything.

  • There are things in the bible that are correct (ie, there was/is a place called Egypt), but there are also a large number of things in the bible that cannot be verified, or worse, fly in the face of modern knowledge (pretty much anything in Genesis). As with any source, you shouldn't accept what it says unless if can be corroborated, and none of the stuff important to Christianity has been corroborated.

  • Nothing of the implied divinity within its pages should be taken as anything other than story-telling. There is no valid, consistent morality within its pages, and it does not merit being quoted as a 'moral guide, of any kind. Overall, it has caused more damage to the world, than benefit. In a word, it is garbage.

Biased, the only answers are accurate or maybe. Where is the option for "No"?
