Is the UK porn ban wrong?

Posted by: Zylorarchy

A similar ban tried to be implemented once before with the ISP's stating it was impossible. Basically it is the same thing again. It is not a blanket ban but all ISP's will be forced to block all pornographic (and various other websites including web forums...) be default. To undo this, we the customers MUST contact out ISP and request the porn filter to be removed. Although all news on this ban as gone quiet with the most recent piece from March this year, it could be implemented by the end of this year.

  • This is totally, utterly, morally wrong. This is nothing but pure internet censorship which once again, punishes the majority for the actions of the minority. Although I am aware this proposal is also about stopping child access, as well as preventing people from turning into perverts and later causing abuse. But this is still unjust. Why should most of the innocent population lose access to pornography when they have done nothing wrong? Most people are not going to become sex offenders after watching porn, no one I know views women as sex objects after watching porn and the solution is so blindingly obvious if Cameron wants to protect children. Have the ISP's offer this with the filter turned OFF by default and then people can request to have it turned off should they wish to protect their children. This also means that ISP's (and therefore the government ultimately) will not have access to all those people who request to have the filter turned off resulting in a list of "porn viewers" which to me, is wrong. This simply punishes the majority due to the actions of the minority and the solution I have proposed, I believe, simply solves the issues with this "ban".

  • While I disagree with all forms of pornographic material, I don't agree with internet censorship. I feel almost torn here since I hate pornography and what it does to families across the globe, but I don't believe anyone has the right to censor someone's speech. I do believe it should be almost impossible for children to view it, but that's not ever going to happen.

  • I disagree with internet censorship.

"and then people can request to have it turned ON"** - I meant people can request to turn the filter on..

@zainhasan110: Um what's your point? And how does that justify banning porn?

It's not blocked by default. You can enable the filter to block porn if you wish when you setup your router.

@GMX: New proposed legislation WILL block it by default.

You know what I find interesting? If porn was so good, then why would you be ashamed to just call and get it unblocked?

@Christian_Debater: For the same reason I would be shy about asking for condoms in a shop and why I would be ashamed to take an STD test, yet neither of those are wrong.. And it is yet more personal data about us that the government could get hold of.

Porn is degrading to women and to men on some level. If you like porn then you become a voyeurs of sorts. Think for a moment, if the only way you could may a "dollar" in the short term is to defile yourself with strangers, possibly against your will, drunk or often high to get through the pain. I mean some people, I guess, must be consenting and "like" it, but it isn't like a bad tattoo that may be lazered off , the guilt, shame, or ramifications of that behavior will follow the participants in some many throughout their lifetime. AS far as censor ship, Mom and Dad have a tough time with the internet, but aren't there parental controls already implemented on most computers?

@Zyloarchy But people still do it. Besides, you think the government doesn't already know you watch pornography? Come on now. Just type net stat in command (the black and white stuff) and you'll see how many things are connected to your computer. If it is that personal, etc. then maybe there's something wrong about watching it. Ever consider that possibility?

@Christian_Debater: Depends on which country, the government may well know but who really honestly knows how much they know? But give them this porn ban, they can get a clear list on who watches porn and who doesn't. I consider there to be nothing wrong with pornography as long as it is lawful, and does not depict violence/rape etc. Other than that, there is nothing really wrong with watching people pleasure themselves. People do NOT have to go into the porn business, no one is forcing them to and watching porn is no worse honestly than watching sex and violence on TV/films and paying violent video games. Nor should porn be banned due to the fact it adversely effects a minority of people who then become sexual offenders. Just like with guns, they only make a minority of people violence and the entire population should not lose them for that.
