This is a weird poll. Is there nothing in between military intervention and total peace? I say that we should only go to war if we declare it constitutionally and if it's a defensive war.

@Texas14 But what if we need to back up another country through a war? Like how we back up South Korea. That certainly wouldn't be a defensive war.
Texas14 says2015-07-16T13:02:08.7595816-05:00
Well in that war if the North had overrun the south, then North Korea would be a much bigger threat. If it's in the interest of the US, then it's okay. But Iraq and Vietnam were not threats to our national security.

But in general, I think the Korean War was a mistake because it was offensive and we didn't declare it, but we got lucky that there was no unintended consequences like in the Middle East.
triangle.128k says2015-07-16T13:05:42.3717307-05:00
North Korea wouldn't be a threat, it's just that the USA wanted to stop the spread of communism from the USSR. Even though North Korea turned into a pseudo-communist totalitarian state.
Texas14 says2015-07-16T13:09:07.4842612-05:00
I agree. We have much bigger threats than North Korea.
triangle.128k says2015-07-16T13:09:12.2110612-05:00
If we hadn't interventioned in the Korean war, North Korea would have taken over almost the entire peninsula. They also has Communist China and the USSR on their side, South Korea would have been screwed without help from the US.

While they may not be much of a threat to us, we did help the Koreans gain some land which a capitalist and democratic government was implemented. North Korea's living conditions are crazy.
triangle.128k says2015-07-16T13:13:00.6843361-05:00
But I do agree about Iraq though, I think the US learnt it's lesson to take military action as a last resort.
Texas14 says2015-07-16T13:18:47.9606520-05:00
Ok I'm glad South Korea exists, but I still question whether it was worth 36,000 American lives, millions of Korean lives, 150,000 Chinese lives, and billions of dollars.
tajshar2k says2015-07-16T13:19:36.9284012-05:00
The U.S should never ever intervene in the middle east ever again. The middle east is a godforsaken land.
triangle.128k says2015-07-16T13:19:43.2151609-05:00
But hey, at least a million people or so were probably killed in North Korea's concentration camps.
triangle.128k says2015-07-16T13:20:27.6280762-05:00
And South Korea became really wealthy and rose quickly, they have a GDP of a trillion.
triangle.128k says2015-07-16T13:21:07.7979618-05:00
I'd say it was worth it, more people would be killed in North Korea than opposed to the war, and they would be killed in much more brutal ways. Not to mention, a lot of potential money would be lost.
TBR says2015-07-16T13:21:54.7389636-05:00
^^^ agreed. Our record on "Intervention" is generally not great. We, the US, should be VERY critical of our record, but we have a bad habit of ignoring our blunders.
TBR says2015-07-16T13:22:31.5951567-05:00
Sorry, I was agreeing with Texas.
Texas14 says2015-07-16T13:22:51.3159361-05:00
Maybe, but hey we're not gonna agree on this, but at least we all agree on the Middle East.
TBR says2015-07-16T13:23:34.0342366-05:00
Now, I will also agree with tajshar2k. Our "successes" in the ME are... Well, its hard to find any clear success, and lots of failure.

My last comment was directed at triangle by the way
triangle.128k says2015-07-16T13:26:17.6957126-05:00
But when you think about it, the Korean war was just short-term and all. Having North Korea control almost the whole Peninsula is long term suffering for all Koreans, and torture in concentration camps for many others.
tajshar2k says2015-07-16T13:27:59.4628715-05:00
There are alot of "not as religious"places that injustices happen to minorities, so I wouldn't mind helping them out.
Texas14 says2015-07-16T13:29:50.0117126-05:00
@triangle, North Korea still has concentration camps and is starving most of its people.
triangle.128k says2015-07-16T13:32:03.2513126-05:00
Yeah but 2/3rds of the Korean population are living fine under the Southern government. So at least there's a 'sane' half of Korea which wouldn't exist without the US and maybe the UN.
