Murder vs. Rape: Who is the lesser of 2 evils?

This will be a hard one...

  • Murder

  • Rape

  • I'd rather die than be raped. One is instantaneous, allowing the suffering to end, and with the other the pain lasts almost forever.

  • Death happens eventually anyway, and one could argue that because of this, it is more humane to murder. Not to mention the fact that rape is a form of torture. So I ask the OP, which is the lesser of two evils: Murder, or Torture?

  • People usually have some sort of justification of murder beyond "immediate gratification"

  • rape means you are emotionally scarred for life.

  • The victim is still alive in the aftermath.

  • I rather get raped than murdered. But rape is still very horrible. Rape is basically using another person as an object, you effectively are taking away their humanity which is something no one should have taken away.

  • Ayahuasca can heal the emotional damage of rape.

  • I understand the emotional damage of being raped, but this is common sense.

  • This is a tough choice. This can be considered torture (I think it is) but it's better to be still alive afterwards

  • While with murder the suffering may end so does any joy and everything else. Just because you are raped does not mean you don't have things in your future to look forward to. It does not mean you will never enjoy life again. Rape is a terrible crime but I would rather be raped than murdered.

Petersmith, murder isn't always instantaneous.
PetersSmith says2015-04-05T13:03:53.5826875-05:00
Mathgeekjoe: Instantaneous as in you're going to die quicker than if you were raped.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-05T13:04:37.0049477-05:00
There are exceptions to that.
PetersSmith says2015-04-05T13:05:59.0978737-05:00
Mathgeekjoe: Really? Would you mind elaborating on that? Are you saying after being raped you'll suddenly die of natural causes?
Buckethead31594 says2015-04-05T13:07:55.4248366-05:00
Mother nature murders us. We slowly die, every single day.
Vox_Veritas says2015-04-05T13:09:21.6755779-05:00
People can recover from rape, though. You cannot recover from having been murdered.
Buckethead31594 says2015-04-05T13:09:43.3279615-05:00
Mathgeekjoe, murder is always instantaneous. There's murder and there's attempted murder. Either you die, or you are still living. The point at death is considered murder, nothing before.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-05T13:09:43.9378230-05:00
Well you can have heart attacks, car accidents, suicide, etc. There is also really long forms of murder such as giving someone an form of rabies that the vaccine doesn't work for, giving them a poison that takes a really long time to kill, starving them to death, killing them by malnutrition, etc.
Vox_Veritas says2015-04-05T13:10:51.7743628-05:00
By the way, hi there, Buckethead31594. It's been a while.
Buckethead31594 says2015-04-05T13:10:54.5249923-05:00
Yes, but the whole act of starving someone constitutes torture, which is more in line with rape. Murder is when they die from said torture.
PetersSmith says2015-04-05T13:12:28.0388318-05:00
Mathgeekjoe: Yeah, okay, but that's a poor argument. The question doesn't specify how you would be murdered and those ways are unconventional.
Buckethead31594 says2015-04-05T13:12:32.2353394-05:00
Hi there, Vox. Yes it has been a while!
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-05T13:13:27.9948409-05:00
@Buckethead What if you drown a person to legal death, then revive them, then murder them again?
Buckethead31594 says2015-04-05T13:16:05.3646145-05:00
Revive them? You mean, bring them back from the dead? I find that quite unlikely. I would contend the act of drowning them is torture. They are not truly dead until you cannot 'bring' them back to life.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-05T13:16:23.9282575-05:00
I mean clinical death, not legal death.
Buckethead31594 says2015-04-05T13:17:05.4585471-05:00
You're either dead, or alive; there is no in between. If I am wrong, please correct me.
Buckethead31594 says2015-04-05T13:17:57.3704605-05:00
Well in that case, I believe the "first death" wouldn't be considered as murder, so much as attempted murder, which is something entirely different.
retrogamer176 says2015-04-05T13:20:54.1064115-05:00
@mathgeek @peter I'm talking about a human intentionally killing another human that doesn't want to be killed. It doesn't matter HOW they die. It's murder in general.
PetersSmith says2015-04-05T13:22:02.4733649-05:00
Retrogamer176: Then my point stands.
Mathgeekjoe says2015-04-05T13:25:16.8608086-05:00
I still find murder worse, rape can be recoverable. I personally rather exist in a horrible situation than loose my existence. I even had a debate on whether it is better to exist or not. Http://www.Debate.Org/debates/it-is-better-to-have-never-been-exist/1/

Ayahuasca heals the emotional damage from being raped. Nothing can bring you back to life.
Itani says2015-04-05T14:32:19.0365146-05:00
Murder isn't always instantaneous, what about being tortured and then murdered?
Tumblrnatic says2015-04-05T14:41:49.9391822-05:00
This poll is nasty! WHY?
retrogamer176 says2015-04-05T14:51:17.8031578-05:00
@Tumblrnatic :)
124275 says2015-04-06T19:33:40.3153346-05:00
It should be which instead of who.
