People need to buy a dictionary and learn what the word bigot means, because they don't know what it means.

A bigot is "a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion." for example: A person who here's an opinion and because they think it is immoral/wrong refuses to even listen or dispute them and may immediately resort to name calling. A belief could be utterly horrible and that person may still not be a bigot so long as they are able to calmly debate without instantly demonizing the opponent in their mind.

  • People are not using it right and may in some cases think it means anyone who has an apposing opinion

  • People are usually using it right.

  • I agree that it is frequently misused.

  • All the people who have different views that you are called bigots. Who's the real bigot here?

  • It's really sad how much people continually misuse the word "bigot" when they don't know what the word really means. A society does not get to re-interpret its definition because doing so would be subverting (or perverting) the power and authority of the English language - which sets a dangerous precedent in the linguistic realm. Being corrupt or ever-changing does not justify any society the means to change the definition of "bigot". Instead of forcing new meaning onto the word "bigot, " we should first understand its true definition before applying it into our own messages (given that the word "bigot" is used correctly). We must respect the true definition of "bigot, " because otherwise we'd be misleading people into believing something that wasn't an issue in the first place. Misuses of individual words cannot be compared with bad or incorrect grammar because grammar is about form/structure whilst words are about concept. Incorrect grammar can be understood, But incorrect use of a word can arouse a thought that completely deviates from the word's actual definition. Just because you see or hear the word "bigot" doesn't always mean people know what it means or how to use it.

  • Its really sad how much people care about dictionary definitions more than hatered and real issues. Society controls what words mean. Language evolves maybe the dictionary is out of step woth the times i dont know. Instead of trying to control the words people used when you still fully understand the medsage theyre trying to get across, maybe worry more about the actual message? Its the same thing as people who constantly correct grammer. No one thinks its clever.

Nice straw-man.

Right though? People in an argument like "Its hateful to discriminate." Then the other person responds with "Yeah, well used a word in the wrong context! I own a dictionary!" its like congrats, you can read.

A racist doesn't make a bigot, just an @$$ hole

You seem very worked-up over someone calling you a bigot. If whatever you are arguing you are certain of, what makes you so concerned about what they call you?

Look, there was a discussion of "political correctness" just the other day. This dovetails with that. The dodge "PC Police" when discussing a issue like this etc. Engage in the conversation rather than insisting that everyone else is just wrong.

You say people need to buy a dictionary to really know what bigot means, but you did not even spell "hears" correctly. You spelled it "here's" :/ no to be rude honestly, just pointing out that saying people need a dictionary to know what bigot means but you didn't spell hears correctly :)

I think you should look at Stefy's answer above "Its the same thing as people who constantly correct grammer. No one thinks its clever." I agree.

I think it's a control issue. When people feel they are losing control in an argument or discussion, they correct grammar or use ridiculous semantics.

I just am tired of unjust name calling.
Stefy says2015-07-11T20:44:21.4590207-05:00
Dude how often are you called a bigot?
TBR says2015-07-11T21:17:09.2952333-05:00
Xhammy - Think you are tired? Ask the people that might be calling you a bigot feel.

They shouldn't just start calling me names, I don't hate people for what they cannot change. Since I know this is implied, I do have gay friends, even if I think homosexuality is wrong.
TBR says2015-07-11T21:28:08.5669846-05:00
I said nothing about homosexuality. Regardless xhammy, the point remains, when someone objects to you, trust that they are sincere. If you are feeling "put upon" they may very well be too, right?
xhammy says2015-07-11T21:32:15.5887707-05:00
Simply my point is, you cannot have an anti-LGBT opinion without someone calling you a bigot, regardless to if your a bigot.
xhammy says2015-07-11T21:33:29.8155919-05:00
I also said implied, not by you but by the word bigot. I feel its safe to say that when someone says bigot you thing LGBT issues.
TBR says2015-07-11T21:35:41.4689377-05:00
Xhammy - Welcome to the 21st century. The gay people you argue with today were called much worse than "bigot" only a handful of years ago. I have no sympathy for your hurt feelings.
TBR says2015-07-11T21:40:39.4720384-05:00
"bigot" is not synonymous with you thing LGBT issues. I don't get that at all.
TBR says2015-07-11T21:41:18.0540287-05:00
"bigot" is not synonymous with LGBT issues. I don't get that at all. (sorry, butchered that last bit)

Xhammy, You are definitely right that people have an automatic reaction today to call someone a bigot just because they are anti-LGBTQ. And yes people do need to learn English so that comprehension is possible during a discussion. BTW, to understand what a word really means is not being politically correct but being exceptionally better than a bigot.
