Should canada remove the queen?

Posted by: o0jeannie0o

Canada still uses the British Queen mainly for "image" purposes. We spend millions sending them on vacations here.

  • Get rid of the queen in Canada

  • Keep Canada's Queen

  • She's useless at the moment anyways. Can't do anything.

  • I have only but a few words to say: figurehead & waste of money.

  • Why keep her? To remind the Canadians that Britain use to rule it?

  • Abolish the monarch!

  • god save the queen, I mean it mahhhhnnnn

  • There's no point in keeping her. Government should represent the people, which the queen doesn't do.

  • Get your tea sippin A$$ outta here!

  • She is no queen of ours. We are independent of Britain. We deserve an eleced head of state. Stephen Harper should be made the new President and Commander in Chief of Canada. No more crap where the British Monarch has to approve of our laws. Seriously, we should elect a President from the existing political parties to lead our countries and our Parliament. PS. The title change from prime minister to president is just something I threw in for effect, I know the title is currently prime minister. I know how government works. Just a fictions scenario.

  • Why?

  • Look at France,Germany, and the US. They're all boring republics, want to know why? Because they removed their Queens. God save the Queen.

  • If we didnt have a president as a figurehead, and it was all Congress, yeoch. Cant say I like the current one by any stretch of the imagination ... but certainly better than nothing.

Could be a waste of money ... But you will definitely need your political candidates to step up and fill a figurehead role. At the moment your party leaders running for office appear weaker than that woman right there. If you need more than just the mental image of what that actually might look like, check out their recent debate that aired about 3 weeks ago. Thats what a real Canadian figurehead looks and sounds like?

Freedombeforeequality, you have it all wrong. Your president is a good figurehead because he has actual power, the Queen has none. Hardly anyone in Canada views our politicians as weaker than the Queen. Besides, our real figurehead is the PM, obviously, not the Queen.
Midnight1131 says2015-08-24T21:57:18.4001642Z
The Queen doesn't even do anything in Canada. She sends another guy over here to act as a "representative of the queen." And this guy, the governor general, has no power at all. He simply signs whatever's put in front of him.
FreedomBeforeEquality says2015-08-25T15:38:19.0242183Z
If its anything like the British monarchy ... Having them as celebrity figureheads that speak to the people from time to time and sort of represent something higher for all the people of that nation to stand behind is pretty powerful. Especially amongst free nations, its a very good thing to have a piece of something everyone can rally behind even though they squabble about everything else. In the US it does not help at all that our figurehead is politically affiliated in a two party system. That just makes for half the population to hate him all the time.
Midnight1131 says2015-08-25T16:19:49.5566346Z
Yeah, but you see, here no one respects the Queen. No one in Canada wants any British influence or figureheads here. The Queen is no one to represent the people because no one wants her here.
FreedomBeforeEquality says2015-08-25T17:54:57.5864243Z
If thats the case then sure. I didnt get the impression though that literally "no one" respected the queen. I have a feeling that that is a very new age thing and that true Canadians are actually proud of their British influence. They didnt have so bloody a separation as others who left British rule. There has to still be some respect shared there. I mean, we literally had to kill our way out of their rule and our people dont hold a grudge toward England for it. We are still pretty civil about it and kept a great many of their ideals in our own government.

And fought beside them in virtually every war after that too.

Difference between a true Canadian and an ordinary Canadian is...
FreedomBeforeEquality says2015-08-25T20:24:10.4729034Z
Time served as a Canadian. Respect for your country. More of an investment into the country. You can be Canadian just because your mother happened to shit you out over Canadian soil. Im sure it takes a bit more than that to actually grow a respect for the place. Some of those people have actually fought and bled for that nation. Others can only claim that they got to go to public school there and live on their parents property.
FreedomBeforeEquality says2015-08-25T20:25:46.7117710Z
Theres definitely a wide spectrum of citizens there ... But your better generation is dying off. This poll is evidence of that.
Midnight1131 says2015-08-25T21:58:05.4976881Z
Haha, that's funny. You think the generation that liked the Queen is better?? Do you have any idea how many people don't like or don't care about the Queen?
Midnight1131 says2015-08-25T22:01:06.5212485Z
Also, as of 2015, 73% of Canadians believe that the head of state should be Canadian and Canadian-born, not some overseas monarch. In fact, Canadians that want the monarch gone have been in the majority since the 90's, it's not some "new age" thing that you're talking about.

Tell that wrinkly sack of sh*it to get out of Canada! Nobody needs you!

The Queen doesn't even have any power, so abolishing the Queen would be useless. Also, Canada doesn't have a Queen, they have a Prime minister. The queen is British, and even there a Prime Minister has all of the actual power.
Muttl200 says2015-08-26T19:03:12.6880812Z
Technically, she is the Queen of Canada, as well as New Zealand, Australia, and a few other small countries.
Midnight1131 says2015-08-26T19:47:59.8677066Z
Muttl200 we know... The entire point of the poll is whether or not she should leave...
Muttl200 says2015-08-26T19:59:43.3854163Z
@Midnight1131 I know, I can read. I was just responding to whompydoodles is all.

Also Midnight, you should try reading the comments next time. It'll prevent you from looking like an asshole.

Sorry, my bad.

"You think the generation that liked the Queen is better?? Do you have any idea how many people don't like or don't care about the Queen?" I do. I know its pretty substantial. I know now why it is that people dislike Canadians roughly 73% of the time.

In order to "removing the Queen" Canada would have to leave the British Commonwealth. This wouldn't be difficult in the least, but their are some benefits to being a member.
FreedomBeforeEquality says2015-08-28T15:24:29.8755357Z
I didnt realize they were technically a part of that, but they probably feel independent enough to leave that commonwealth now since they feel they belong to NAFTA (a common wealth of sorts). I think they are still being artificially held up by other countries to believe they are strong enough to stand on their own.
Kreakin says2015-08-28T19:10:48.2483083Z
As a former colony it's more about having a common heritage and working together for mutual benefit. The common wealth trading block continues to grow, currently one third of nations are a member so it is a valuable trading organization. Then we have the military, we all benefit from working together. The figurehead is the tie that binds a thread of trust.
