  • Social Media is a way for students to contact others worldwide and connect with the outside world.

  • It's dangerous sure, but they have to learn somehow. It allows for contact with friends and family and they have any common sense then it'll be ok. If not they either learn from their mistakes or something bad happens. Either way I'm for social media

  • Socia

  • There is really no point in taking it away. If its not social media, its somethig else that is going to be band. So in my opinion, let the kids be kids. They only have a short time to exsperiance the freedom of being a kid. Then its all work, work, work, for the rest of there life's . Me being a kid, I never had that many freedoms, do to not having parents around all the time. I was always the one taking care of my brothers and sisters. So let them be kids, and stop being adualt, and litten up a little.

  • I am going to be on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. I have a lot of friends, and I should be allowed on social media to chat with them.

  • What about them dank memes guys

They only have a short time to experience the freedom of being a kid. Then it's all work, work, work, for the rest of their lives. Me being a kid, I never had that many freedoms, due to not having parents around all the time. I was always the one taking care of my brothers and sisters. So let them be kids, and stop being adult, and lighten up a little.

  • Social media is the height of cyber bullying

  • I don't think social media is a necessity for children. Sure it's fun, but it takes away from their reality and the essential things in life. Also, there are a lot of negative influences like oversexualization, and profane/vulgar content that they should not be too exposed to quite yet.

Where do you choose to make the line. A ten year old and a 17 year old could both be considered a child yet I feel the situation is very different.

As an American, your exclusion of me makes me unable to vote on this poll, but I do not believe that those under the age of 13 should be touching a computer due to their demographic lacking emotional maturity.

Are we talking about in school or just in general?

Not in the UK, so not voting in the poll, but: I think social media, like any technology, has its up sides and down sides. It is not inherently 'bad,' yet can become good or bad depending on how it is used. Sherry Turkle did an interesting TED talk on how social media and increasing interconnectivity is paradoxically making us more alone (she has written books in this too). Larry Rosen, in his book 'Me, Myspace, and I' (yes, as you can see from the title, a bit outdated) makes the opposing case that social media can be beneficial for teens in forming social bonds, and getting through tough times. Both make arguments that are convincing in different ways. I personally do not like using social media, but can see how it is beneficial, especially for young people trying to form identities. At the same time, I can see the many dangers, not limited to the potentially de-humanising aspect of online engagement as 'distant' and 'not real', and considering that young people lack emotional maturity and can end up broadcasting silly or hateful things (that cause harm or that they later regret). I don't think banning children from social media would be effective, but believe that children should be educated on its potential pitfalls so that they can use it wisely.
