  • It was in my school. You took a 90 day class where you learned basic home economics, planning, cooking, etc.

  • Home Economics would be more popular if it was renamed something like "Keys To Independent Living". I enjoyed the class, back in the day. My hubby did, too. You learned a lot of good lessons, before college, living independently, marriage, etc. Unfortunately, by the time our brood attended high school, it was no longer a course option.

We will teach kids irrelevant topics and require them to learn them but we won't require them to learn basic life skills? Makes sense.

Doublehelix, with that logic, why even force kids to go to school? Why not just allow kids to decide if they want to go to school or not..

Really, these basic home skills (cooking, finance, etc) should be taught at home or learned individually. Why? Because school is not supposed to equip you for life. It is supposed to prepare you for a career. In an ideal world, home econ would be taught at home. Of course, there are many cases where kids don't learn these skills at home. Still, the school shouldn't try to fill the role of parents, as they are stretched thin as it is. I would support this idea if our current schools weren't as underfunded or substandard.

Question for anyone here older than 30-or-so: Did your schools teach you personal finance with things like how to buy a house, do taxes, manage a credit account, etc? I always hear people complaining about how schools don't prepare students for real life, but it seems older generations figured it out fine. And this generation has it easier, too, because of the internet. It took me like 10 minutes of Google searches to figure out most of it. I was just wondering if finance or life skills classes ever were mandated or popular...
