Should Hong Kong be returned to the UK?

Posted by: GabeLipworth

Hong Kong people are unhappy and want to return!

  • Yes it should be a British Overseas Territory!

  • No, it should remain a Chinese Territory and then succumb to the Communist rule!

  • I believe in Self Determination, and the Hong Kongese don't want China!

  • I think it would be best for the people there to gain full independence. Sadly i don't think China would have that so Hong Kong Joining the UK again would probably be the best for now. I also recall polls saying like over 80% of Hong Kong residents would rather be British than Chinese so...

  • Independence is better, but U.K is the lesser of two evils.

  • It should be an independent state. The Chinese Communist rule has serious problems. But at least it's intention is to do what's good for the people, unlike the previous Chinese religious rule.

  • This is a loaded question... Despite what the media says, those who want to return to British rule aren't the majority. The majority of Hongkongers are either politically apathetic or simply demand full democracy under Chinese sovereignty. biggest, the poll said over 90%, but it was an online poll. Radical anti-government groups tend to mobilise their comrades to vote-bomb online polls; it happens all the time. An online poll is inherently biased and no accurate measure of public opinion. With all that said, there are real reasons why we shouldn't return. The first reason is political. We prospered under the British rule because we had competent governors who, despite not allowing democracy, improved the quality of life in Hong Kong constantly, starting from Murray MacLehose. Times have changed, however, and the top-down model that made Hong Kong prosper at the time will no longer work in the 21th century. Let's be honest, most of the people who support returning to the UK just miss the rapid economic growth, but I don't think returning now will grant it. The second reason is also political. The Sino-British Joint Declaration can't be reversed. The third reason is social. Decolonialisation efforts by the government have been far-reaching and extensive; it will be hard to go back to the colonial system. Many members of the young generation - I don't mean teenagers my age, or even those slightly younger, but kids below the age of ten - are already accustomed to Chinese rule, and many are instilled with patriotism and national pride. Return to British rule is not going to be popular with them.

I forgot to say, this is a loaded question because staying in China doesn't mean succumbing to Communist rule.

Because the Vatican is the religious centre of Catholicism, a massive religion and the Pope held a considerable amount of power back when the Vatican became a city-state - he still does, sort of. Hong Kong is just a city.
