"Don't let him be a martyr, put him in jail for life." Isn't that the same as a martyr, if you are kept in jail for life then you die in the jail still.

But the difference is he would die alone and isolated, in an area where it couldn't be largely publicized (plus many people would probably forget who he was by that point), whereas giving him the death penalty now would be covered by the media to a huge extent and therefore would remain fresh in the minds of individuals in the US and around the world for a long time.

Being a martyr has nothing to do with it. It's the actions he took.

It isn't eye for an eye. He killed three people, we can't kill 3 of him. It is like he ripped out 3 eyes, damaged many more eyes, and wanted to rip out more than 100, then we decide to put him on trial for a jury to decide whether his eye gets ripped out or covered with a blindfold.
