No, the confederate flag doesn't stand for racism once so ever. Abraham Lincoln was the one who created the Emancipation Proclamation as a political stunt in attempt to ruin the south's economy. To be more clear, why do you think Liberia is the way it is today? Did people forget Abraham Lincoln sent African Americans there himself? Do people forget the only reason "Honest" Abe created the Emancipation Proclamation is because of the spirits he visited during his seances? People really do need a history lesson. Furthermore, the union attacked the south first and sparked this civil war. Lastly, secession was legal before Lincoln made it illegal.
This flag shouldn't even have been banned from the state house in SC, but politicians like to sell themselves out for a few votes even if it means flying in the face of liberty or better yet our constitution as a whole.
@Haroush - Symbols have meaning outside your own personal perception of that symbol. It may mean to you what you like it, to many others (most outside a small geographic area) it is a terrible symbol. Those that object to the flag have equal ground and very strong reasons to see it as the symbol of hate. You dismissing that is arrogant. Further, saying that "we look like fools" is myopic. Most look on you as the fool or much worse.
@Haroush How is it not based on racism? Lincoln "ruined" the southern economy because he saw slavery as immoral. Seances aren't even real, he saw slavery as immoral. There was nothing wrong with Lincoln going to war against the south. Lincoln tried to keep the union together, the south however wanted to rebel and have their confederacy. What they didn't realize is that the USA used to have a confederate style government under the articles of confederation. The articles were a complete failure which is why the USA's new Constitution implemented a system of federalism.
It should be banned, its a symbol of racism and white supremacy akin to the swastika in its german context. The south seceded to preserve slavery as is evidenced not only by the cornerstone speech, but also by the confederate constitution and the south's vehement resistance to a dismissal of slavery as the cause of the war
It's ironic people Just want to forget about Liberia.. Hypocrites. What about the Irish slaves way before the civil war even started? As far as it standing for racism, the first slave owner here in america was a black man who sold off his own people to the confederates. Furthermore, the north had slaves too. Lastly, it's the winning side that gets to write history but internet thugs like you all wouldn't understand that. On a side note, Secession was legal before Abraham Lincoln.
Before Abraham Lincoln and the civil war. It wasn't until after that he made it illegal for state to secede from it's own government which can be oppressive like what is being created out of this administration right now. And who was it that warned us about an oppressive government? Our forefathers. Who was with the confederates well known descendants of the forefathers including George Washington's nephew.
It's still makes me laugh that people act like Abraham Lincoln really cared about these black people during this time. It was obvious he didn't if you read up. Just like Woodrow Wilson created government programs for minority groups but really couldn't stand black people. The funniest part about it was he was a democrat. Just like JFK had was for minority groups but what did he do? Put Martin Luther King Jr. On the FBI's watch list. And I could go on and on. @TBR, This isn't my own perception, but on the other hand this is only the liberal's perception about the confederate flag in which has been made as fact and accepted by the majority because they listen to too much biased news. Not to mention, republicans have no back bone anymore, and the majority of republicans today are more so neocons or Libertarians. Which = FAKE republicans.
Slavery was much less common in the North and illegal in most states. What's wrong with what Lincoln did? Abraham Lincoln wanted to keep the Union together instead of having it falling apart in pieces. It's perfectly reasonable for him to create a more strengthened union without states being allowed to just walk out. The Union didn't have an oppressive government, and our founding fathers wanted a government under federalism. The southern states decided to trash the progress we made by trashing the Articles of Confederation. Instead, they wanted to operate under a similar system to the failure of the Articles.
Slavery was much less common in the North and illegal in most states. ( Even if it was, that still puts the north in just as much wrong as the south) What's wrong with what Lincoln did? (rolls eyes) Abraham Lincoln wanted to keep the Union together instead of having it falling apart in pieces. (Yeah, doing exactly as I said he did in a corrupt fashion.) It's perfectly reasonable for him to create a more strengthened union without states being allowed to just walk out.( You say so but our founding fathers don't.) The Union didn't have an oppressive government, and our founding fathers wanted a government under federalism. ( This is your perception of this situation which is not so.) The southern states decided to trash the progress we made by trashing the Articles of Confederation. Instead, they wanted to operate under a similar system to the failure of the Articles. ( Yeah, even though we are in a global economy that thrives off of slavery all over the world still today.)
"Abraham Lincoln wanted to keep the Union together instead of having it falling apart in pieces."
And did so by killing nearly half of its citizens. I think that sort of killing and removal of ideas is akin to something a German Chancellor once did to annex countries that wanted no part in his rule.
Listen everyone! The reason MOST in the south want to fly the confederate flag along side the American Flag is not at all for racist reasons. It is mainly due to the need to restore/keep southern heritage. Those in the south don't want anyone to forget their heritage and history.
@freedombeforeequality, Abraham Lincoln never personally killed anyone and the civil war didn't kill half the U.S citizens. It killed between 1 and 2 percent. Not to say that it wasn't horrible, but don't exaggerate the facts to make a point.
@monkeyman, very few people are suggesting that it be removed from museums and historical sights, and the flag IS a symbol of racism and human bondage. By the way if you want to celebrate southern pride (as I do) watch SEC football at barbecues like the rest of us.
@Texas14, At the time, Lincoln did have many civilians killed that were with the South. And when I say many around half of the citizens who lived in the South were killed. Which back then that is much more than 1 or 2 percent. Maybe not half of the American citizens but definitely more than 1 or 2 percent.
Also, I don't think MM was talking about flags in museums or historical places. I am pretty sure he was talking about the confederate flag out in public and yes at the SC State House. Also, most people are claiming the flag is a symbol of racism and bigotry, this is the reason it got taken down in the first place. Instead of focusing on the killer they focused on the flag, just like when someone has a gun and kills someone,"The gun killed them!" No the person killed those people with a gun.
It killed half of the men that enlisted who could fight. http://www.nps.gov/civilwar/facts.htm Look at casualties versus enlistment strength. It killed half of those men and enslaved all the rest that werent enlisted to fight.
