# Should the US switch to the metric system

• Metric system

• United States Standard system

• Obviously a better system with standardized numbers etc.

• The metric system is much more widely used, so if the US uses it, we will be able to communicate ideas more efficiently. I don't understand exactly what our current system is based on, and it's harder to understand than the metric system. The only problem is that it will be hard to convert the whole country, and it may not be possible.

• Death to the imperial system!

• Imperial system is dam, Does't have any sense.

• People say fractions are easier in SAE because 12 is evenly by 2, 3, 4, and 6, but that's because they have been taught how to divide in this system and not by the metric system. 10cm. divided by 6 is 1/6 of 10 or 10/6. you could just leave it there, or, this further simplifies to 1cm and 2/3 of another, or 1 cm ~6mm, or if you want it more specific ~60 micrometers, or, ~600 nanometers..... The fact is that the only situation where something that is divisible by 12 is when you need convenient numbers for carpentry or otherwise, but even them is usually more convenient to use an arbitrary measurement and divide it by using a length dividing tool or folding a paper by a set number of times with its length equal to the distance you want to divide.

• The metric system is a lot easier to compare parts of it. How much Meters are in a kilometer? Easy 1,000. What about how much feet in a mile? I would need to look that one up. Metric is based on tens not random numbers. It makes sens why science it and the rest of the world use it. What is the point of two systems. We do not need the one that makes less sens. As an American citizen I know how annoying the Imperial system can be.

• There is no reason why we should give in to the communist plot that is the metric system, since when have conversion charts available instantly on Google there is no confusion between scientists or anything like that. All temperature end in either f or c and all lengths end in in or cm, ft or m, mi or km, so there is no reason at all. USA! USA! USA!

• The Imperial system has its place and metric has its place. We shouldn't dump our system over peer pressure for easy conversion.

• It is way too hard to convert a whole country now to the metric system. Although it can be easy, people would have to re-learn the whole entire measuring units.

Well... Technically we ARE on the metric system. We long ago "officially" adopted were SI, we just don't use it. Further, lots of countrys who DO use the metric system also use other measurements. A mixed system is not that bad. I prefer metric for many things, but the SAE works well for many other things.

Exactly. Measuring my height in feet is more convient, because it's easier to compare. I don't have to worry about decimals and such.

@tajshar2k It's more direct in metric though, you directly see the height without having to put 12 inches into one group.
The world should switch to the American system.

Yeah if they want the world to be standardized then the rest of the snobby-ass commie world can change to the goddamn mile and pound!

In my opinion we are used to measuring height, weight, length and distance in inches, feet's, pounds and miles so much so that, it will bring more confusion if the Us adopt the metric system. We are better of sticking to the imperial measurement, less headache.

We shouldn't use the metric system because we are different and using the metric system would make us like every other country
catwoman21 says2016-10-21T16:36:02.8465966Z
Not using the metric system makes us different. So using it would make us the same as every other country. Down with the metric system!!!!!

The metric system is based on tens which are much easier to use then multiples of 12 even if you memorize your twelves you still might need help which you can use the internet for but you might not always have that on you.
