  • Yes, the person who was raped should be free to decide to abort. Someone already took away her decision to have sex, don't take away her freedom to choose what's best for her and her body.

  • From what I can see, it's the mother of the girl who made a request for an abortion, not the girl herself. Rape is one of the few reasons that justify an abortion in my opinion, but abortion shouldn't be forced on anybody.

  • Adoption is still an option

Somewhat one sided response to this I see.

A341: Well the paraguayan government is probably against it.

"Allowed" is such a telling word in this poll.

An 11 YEAR old girl had to be pregnant... Just imagine how she felt when everybody saw her pregnant in school.

@UtherPenguin isn't that basically taking a baby out early and putting them in some test tube or something?

@triangle proven to be a safe method. Adoption is still and option, unless the mother's life is in danger.

Network, actually the girl wasn't even fully aware of what an abortion was. She was 10 years old, her mother was fully responsible for whatever medical decision she allowed but ultimately was denied.

Adoption is an option for "them"

Briantheliberal, in my opinion, the fact that the girl didn't ask for an abortion is still a good reason to refuse her one. Abortion is a serious medical procedure, the kind of which, in my opinion, should require a patient's fully informed consent. Sufficient knowledge of the procedure is part of the requirements for informed consent. The other part is ensuring the patient isn't succumbing to peer pressure. In the Paraguayan girl's case, I would argue the girl almost certainly didn't give informed consent (her mother insisting for the abortion is a red flag. Erika Guevara insisting that the authorities should make the abortion without the patient's approval is a much bigger one). Informed consent could sometimes be inferred if the patient's life is in immediate danger («That guy needs an heart transplant. He passed out before giving explicit consent for it. A reasonable person would want the transplant, so let's give him one.»), but the Paraguayan authorities made it very clear that they were closely monitoring the girl's pregnancy in case anything went awry, and apparently the girl was doing fine the whole time.

"Adoption is still an option" I never heard anything so sick and insensitive as this. You should be appalled with yourself.
