Should Washington DC be granted statehood?

Posted by: imabench

All of its laws are subjected directly to Congress, making the Capital of the US ironically the one place in the continental US that has taxation without representation

Funny, this came up the other day with a user who I will not name. He said the reason we should destroy social security was because it was "taxation without representation". After gathering the shatters of my brain, I thought, there ARE a handful (~600k) Americans that CAN say this.

I would love to hear from a no vote. I for the life of me cant understand the justification for this.

Well it just dosn't make any sense to make it a state. Now yeah there are some benefits, but in my eyes it dosn't really need statehood. Also in my opinion it is way to small to be a state. I would rather have gurm, or purto rico become states.

Well, as noted above, it has a larger population than two other states currently in the union. The other obvious issue is, they are the only Americans without representation in congress. That is a big issue.

Just looked it up, Beats Guam's population by several times.

We shouldnt make it a state cause 50 states sounds better than 51

Um, yeah but can't it just be part of maryland, or virgania? I mean it is just way to small to be a state. Also you are say washington dc witch is a city. So that state would have one city, and thata it. I am sorry but it is just dumb to make that small area a state. It should instead be counted as maryland, or virgania when it comes to voteing.

Those are not solutions without merit. The only point I would belabor would be "size". Again, it is not that small, and hence, this is not a trivial mater.
stargate says2015-08-04T00:12:29.2988261Z
Um...I guess, but I am more undersized. But lets face it, it will not happen.

Its no more a long-shot than Guam. Well, I would get it much better chance than Guam.

Stargate you realize that guam is only three times the size of DC right? To say DC is too small to be a state but then believe Guam should be a state is completely hypocritical

The only argument that I can think of to why DC should not be a state would be that the constitution does say that the Capital will be its own district under the direct control of congress.
