Should we re-allow profanity on this site?

Posted by: Mister_Man

For about a month, the filter stopped working and profanity (and anything, really) was allowed on this site. Wondering if you guys would want the option to swear again or not.

Its a thin line between proper society and absolute anarchy the likes of which Renegader, and Mister_Man would like to see. This poisoning of the youth makes me want to hurl. They wont stop their debauchery and sinful way without proper software - as Jesus himself would have written had he had a computer at the time. I bet some smart fells could find the code in the bible - but the entire tech world is overrun with liberals from the west-coast.
stargate says2015-09-09T18:35:00.2208036Z
Yeah but the all already know these words. If they are in middle school and up. I also doubt that people in grade school use this site so.........

True I have repented and learned the true ways of our lord and savior, and while I got you here, would you like to hear about the one who sacrificed himself for humanity?

I installed Linux the other day on a suggestion. Know what it has? Demons. That's right. There is a darn daemon for just about everything in there. I was replacing Windows because its chop-a-block full of "Wizards". The tech world is RUN by Satan. I was going to buy a Mac, then the fellera told me it ran something called BSD, way-way under the hood - hidden from everything. Know what it is? Its a gosh darn devil

"Wah wah wah, I want to curse *wails* wah wah this site's restricting my freedom of speech, complain, complain*" There's a reason the filter exists. Why do those who vote to remove it even want it to be removed? So they can tell someone to "go (censored) themselves"? That's what gets people banned, that's insulting other members, and that's violating the TOS. Or do you want the filter down so you can express how "angry" you are? "Grr, Republicans are so (censored) stupid, I'm so angry." Or maybe you just want to remove it because "I don't like rules because there's too many rules in real life and/or '(censored) the system'".No, the filter is pretty much here to prevent you from acting like children. Without order and rules there will be anarchy, and will ruin the legitimacy of the site, and deter underage members who wish to express their opinions. If the filter was down people would abuse it, like you all did when it was down, and thus the filter deters users from using profanity because of annoyance ("censored" ones get submitted) and/or they can't be easily used in the first place. And even "censoring" curse words is not okay. Users get banned for doing that, such as the recent case with Mirza. It's not "limiting your freedom of speech", where you can hear airmax1227's take on it here:
TBR says2015-09-09T20:30:09.3724234Z
@PetersSmith - People want the filter removed for a number of legitimate reasons. 1) It is very frustrating - posts that contain no profanity or spam of any sort are "dumped". 2) Profanity is a normal part of speech. People tempering their free-flowing conversations over simple word choice is frustrating. || This is not some issue of freedom of speech, it is the user-base telling the mods and owners what they want.
Renegader says2015-09-09T20:30:10.3863862Z
Classic rant stemming from your rampant paternalism and pathetic "protect the children" farce.
PetersSmith says2015-09-09T20:39:33.6280404Z
Renegader: It's not "rampant paternalism". If you cannot understand the reality of things and how this site works, then you can go take up your complaints with airmax1227. The "true patriarch". Of this site. After all, I just do what he says.
PetersSmith says2015-09-09T20:41:09.8932962Z
TBR: Clearly the mod (not mods) decided that the filter is necessary. If you believe this is not so, then you can go write a complaint to airmax1227 and he will reasonably assist you and accommodate you to the best of his ability.
tajshar2k says2015-09-09T20:42:34.4643996Z
Atleast make the filter function properly. Some words that aren't even swear words get filtered. Pretty annoying.
PetersSmith says2015-09-09T20:43:09.3143582Z
Also, if you are unable to comprehend or completely disagree with the filter system, then it is more recommend to seek an alternative site of similar form than complain about it randomly (which furthers and does nothing besides forcing people like airmax1227 to reiterate things, which he even mentions in that forum post).
TBR says2015-09-09T20:52:27.8454033Z
Clam down... Its not a personal attack on you. Users get a chance to say how they feel, commiserate with each other and have a little fun. The site is not our homework assignment, its for fun. Lighten-up.

You're the one winging here PetersSmith. Never mind that the majority of users (who are the lifeblood of this site) want change and no amount of common sense arguments will prevail as they always fall on the deaf ears of these fascist moderators who care not about us the humble users but only about their pathetic 'lets all get along and not offend people' (which I find highly counter productive on a debate site) agenda. I mean fair enough if this was club penguin or a my little pony forum, but its a debate site, I mean the home page literally says "come to debate online and read the opinions of others" what it should say is "come to debate online and read others highly censored and frivolous opinions that only the moderators deem as acceptable because in a free society we should all think and behave the exact same"

Hect10: You clearly don't understand what is "censored" on this site and what the filter "removes".
Forthelulz says2015-09-10T00:50:04.6167600Z

Mister_Man says2015-09-10T14:23:55.0717935Z
Peters - the filter removes everything. "Comment submitted for moderation" after practically every post. Whether it be a link, an "accidental" swear word, copypasting something that the filter doesn't like (I have no idea how the bloody thing works), and so on... Hect10 actually has an incredibly valid point. The mod/mods/admins are too busy "making the site an appropriate and safe place" to consider the views of practically 3/4 of the members. When the filter went down last month, it wasn't anarchy. It wasn't chaos. The site wasn't filled with people making nonsense posts mindlessly swearing and posting porn links. It stayed relatively sane, however people were actually able to speak their mind without worrying that their post won't actually post for whatever reason. As it is now, I'm copying every single comment I ever make on this site on the (not)off-chance it doesn't wanna post. I've had opinion votes not submit, and I've contacted Airmax about it and all I've got was a "we'll look into it." I'm not complaining about him or any action taken (or not taken), I'm just saying, the amount of "bad" stuff that happens when the filter is removed is miniscule and worth the happiness of the members, in my opinion anyway.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T14:28:49.2485363Z
Also, Peters, nobody understands what is "censored" and what the filter "removes." Is there a forum or something that explains this, or can you give us a hint or something? And to whoever asked what the "anything really" meant, I think the filter doesn't like some links and copied stuff.
TBR says2015-09-10T14:55:19.7702225Z
What is the harm in the user (customers) of the site saying how they feel about the site! I doubt anyone thinks the poll mod can remove the filter, we are not picking on you PetersSmith, but the response is insulting. "We all behave like children", well even if that were true, so what?
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T15:12:56.3025951Z
Yeah I wasn't bagging you out, Peters, you're just the mod (so I've heard) for the Polls, so I'm addressing you with my questions and concerns. I think the feelings of the members should be one of the top priorities.
TBR says2015-09-10T15:18:29.9545627Z
@Mister_Man - I have this odd obsession with making several members eat a bug. Now, I have never been a bully, I am not bullying these guys, but for whatever reason, they need to eat a bug - I know I am right about this one. Now, that is childish. Saying how I feel about a subject while including iniquitous words found in many books that were a part of my 7th grade reading list should be allowed.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T15:30:49.2150727Z
Hahah yeah.... Disallowing us to use certain words because very few people (especially ones that use this site) find them "offensive" is ridiculous. I don't think I know a single person who has actually complained when the filter went down. And yeah, we were using every word in the English language in elementary school, we should be able to on a debate site.
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T15:39:01.4606281Z
Peters said you all should talk directly to Airmax since she just follows his instructions. Why don't you do that instead of hounding her? After all, he has the most power if not all so maybe you'd get farther if you talked to him. Airmax is a great guy and I'm sure he'd be happy to answer your concerns.
TBR says2015-09-10T15:41:21.0269175Z
As it has been noted before, filtering the real word out, but not the "childish" fill-in is arguably worse. How the he11 does it make it any better for the reader?
TBR says2015-09-10T15:43:54.7532591Z
@mishapqueen - Where is anyone hounding her? Please, I am tired of explaining this. There has never been a poll where (to the best of my knowledge) anyone has placed any amount of blame on HER.
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T15:48:02.4876962Z
TBR, maybe I'm seeing things, but all I see is everyone jumping on Peters. Give her a break. Being a mod is hard. Also I'm tired of getting the notifications your pointless squabbling creates. Talk about something worthwhile instead. Honestly, I hate seeing the f bomb everywhere and editing out curses. If you wanna curse so much just say something decent like "rats" or "dang".
TBR says2015-09-10T15:55:36.8250086Z
@mishapqueen - Well I take exception to this. No one is "jumping on Peters" about the issue of the filter, however, if you dislike the notifications I will tell you what she has said to me in the past about them "turn them off".
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T15:58:43.4802051Z
I just think arguing with her is a waste of time, because she can only do what Airmax tell her. Giving her all your arguments for taking it down is pointless because it needs prior permission from him.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T16:00:47.3908235Z
"Yeah I wasn't bagging you out, Peters, you're just the mod (so I've heard) for the Polls, so I'm addressing you with my questions and concerns." - I'm too lazy to read what I've said before this, but I talked to Airmax about wondering why an opinion opinion was "submitted for moderation," and he responded with "I'll look into it." I'm sure he has more important things to do lol but Peters is the only mod I've talked to about anything really (I'm not active in the forums at all, it's just a goddam popularity contest over there), so I was hoping she could help, that's all :0
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T16:05:37.7876609Z
She specifically said she can only do what Airmax says.
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T16:07:11.9810647Z
And if you want help, how about you ask her for it instead of confronting her with your arguments. She's very helpful if you ask for it instead of challenging her
TBR says2015-09-10T16:08:04.4984311Z
I don't think he can remove it either. Again, the way I see it is we are users discussing a site issue among ourselves. Where and how PetersSmith, Airmax, or anyone else involves themselves in the discussion is up to them. Its a topic of conversation, that all. Get worked-up about it, or ignore it. Makes no difference to me, and shouldn't to anyone else on the thread. Taking general grousing as some personal insult is unnecessary.
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T16:10:19.8842692Z
General grousing is a waste of time and irritating to the people around you.
TBR says2015-09-10T16:12:56.5223187Z
That's what you think - walk away. It can be cathartic to the users that DO participate. Do you think anyone on this site can effect policy on abortion? Does it get discussed?
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T16:16:32.5550581Z
Mishap, we're just discussing ways to improve the site. Whether it be a coding issue or a simple "switch" Juggle or Airmax can turn on or off or alter in any way, we're discussing what can possibly improve the quality of the site, as well as the moods of the members. I'm not saying people are in a bad mood because they can't swear, I'm just saying being able to say what you want, without worrying if the filter is gonna give you the middle finger or not, would be beneficial.
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T16:16:35.0666742Z
The thing is, Airmax already addressed this issue. And abortion is discussed in debates and there's argumentation. That's a false analogy because this is not the debate section and it is self described as grousing.
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T16:18:24.7197771Z
Then talk to Airmax. Nothing will happen here
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T16:19:50.7387285Z
And I didn't like the polls when it was down. I don't like reading profanity. I don't consider it an improvement.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T16:25:01.7423221Z
The point I (and I think TBR) am trying to make is that simply contacting Airmax, although beneficial to myself and him in a couple ways, isn't going to draw up a discussion. People won't start brainstorming, nobody will be voicing their opinion in the public and for everyone to see and comment on and react to. Openly discussing things we want changed, disagree with, agree with, want to improve on, etc. is nothing but beneficial to the site. Having a 1-on-1 with Airmax is going to regurgitate the same sh*t he's heard from many members, it won't spark a huge discussion between multiple people at once. You don't see one random member of congress walking up to Obama and saying "hey let's build a border fence" and expect change. There's a huge, multi-day discussion with hundreds of government officials and such.
TBR says2015-09-10T16:25:03.3449547Z
Others disagree. That's life. The filter "issue" is more than just about swearing anyway. I can't count how many non-profane posts have been eaten for unknown reasons. The thing is a monster.
PericIes says2015-09-10T16:25:33.9685399Z
I don't like demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those). I don't like the polls when these are allowed. I don't consider them an improvement. Obviously they should be banned.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T16:26:13.6899833Z
If I cut off one of my fingers every time I saw "comment submitted for moderation" when I hadn't done anything in violation of the TOS... Well, I wouldn't be able to jack off anymore.
mishapqueen says2015-09-10T16:26:35.3585222Z
I've expressed my opinion enough. Have a great day!
PetersSmith says2015-09-10T16:48:50.3058795Z
Mister_Man: Yes, the explanation of what is censored would be in the link I provided, and the poll guide I made.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T17:02:37.3763812Z
@Pericles - Thanks to you, I now know that a lot of swears have "i"s in them. LOL. @Peters - Thanks for the link, I managed to completely miss that post. Airmax pretty much said what everyone knew though. We know he wants to weed out the racism and nonsense, but the perfect example of this not even being an issue is when the filter went down and anyone could post anything. Our arguments aren't regarding the censorship of the blatantly racist polls, they're for the filter in the comments - a similar one that applies to the forums. It disallows us to have conversations (even if that's not what the poll section was designed for, but it's turned into that and to say "no too bad that's not what I originally wanted" is just ridiculous) without worrying about actually being able to post our argument or not. The Forums sucks for replying and actually having conversations, it's different than practically any other forum I've been a part of and needs some serious work to have conversations between more than two or three people. The type of people in the polls section differs greatly from the forum people. You'll have two people in one post talking to each other for the entire time the thread is alive, whereas here we've already got 11 people, all talking to each other on the subject, replying relatively quickly too. Airmax, in that thread you linked, seemed to be addressing more of the "nonsensical poll topics" than the responses and conversations on the post, which is the main thing we want to see changed. An updated, more advanced polls section, where conversation is encouraged, and replying to posts is organized and easily accomplished... Makes sense. Again, to say "this is not the way the polls section was intended to be used" is not a valid reason to not ensure the happiness of the members.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T17:04:10.9769812Z
Some form of "rich text" would be a huge plus, as there is no way to separate paragraphs in this. It's kind of annoying having a long string of words nobody wants to read lol
Richardsonalj says2015-09-10T20:20:14.9679738Z
We should allow swearing, just as long as people aren't using it to be rude or offensive in any form or way. So yes, although it should be restricted a lot less than now.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T20:53:16.9606788Z
@Richard - I agree, there's a difference between using every word in the dictionary and actually being offensive. If someone chooses to take offense to a word, then that's their problem.
PericIes says2015-09-10T20:56:56.9822814Z
Swear words have power. They have utility outside of messing with people. If they didn't, they wouldn't exist, and if we got rid of them, new words would fill the niche. This is a debate site, and debate requires language, and to ban an entire section of language is both counter-intuitive and ridiculous. We shouldn't cater to the Ned Flanders's of the world at the expense of proper speech.
Mister_Man says2015-09-10T20:58:11.0381639Z
Exactly. It puts emphasis on a point, it adds emotion to your argument. It's not "rude" to use every word of the language, and it sure isn't "rude" to simply put an exclamation on your statement.
Renegader says2015-09-11T03:27:59.5938714Z
Also, I would like to point out that if Peters just said, "hey, I can understand why you guys hold that position but there is nothing in my power I can do," I would not have even bothered her. The problem was that she either agrees with the filter or believes that it is in her interest to espouse the same stance as the site owners. I know this because all of the pro-filter arguments have no substance and are either responses from emotion or blind to the irony of the situation.
Renegader says2015-09-11T03:29:47.4388374Z
Not sure if peters really believes the empty pro-filter arguments or maybe it is in her interest to espouse the same stance as the website owners.
