Spirit of the Law

To follow the spirit of the law is to follow the ideas behind the laws that exist, and to judge cases based on how the laws should or would apply. This system allows for a lot of interpretation and human input, but makes rulings more subjective.

Letter of the Law

To follow the letter of the law is to follow the exact definitions of the laws in the books, and to judge cases strictly by what the laws are. This system allows for little interpretation and human input, but keeps rulings objective.
