I did not like him as a president, but I do realize that he was very important in his actions of forming the new political parties, which competed against Jeffersonians that "ruled" before. His Indian removal act and bad economic policies did not leave a good impression on me. He did make a successful and commendable victory at New Orleans, but at that point the war was already over. Because of this, I do not hate him, but I simply do not like him.
He was the only president to ever pay off the national debt
And lasted one year and then plummeted into a recession.
Andrew Jackson broke the constitution three times
Laubarum, you do realize we had a 5% debt to GDP ration then? And that was pretty small back then, given we didn't have a power house economy.
What were the other two times?
And yet even then no president had payed it off.
He just made the dumb mistake of giving all surplus money to the states.
Completely paying off the debt is not a good thing. Its needed to pay for infrastructure and development. The US couldn't grow on anything less than a 40% debt to GDP.
Didn't Jackson's financial policies, "pet banks," and land speculating lead to extremely high land price inflation? He also tried resolving that with Specie Circular, which just made it worse.
You guys are forgetting a lot of other stuff he did. He greatly expanded the nation, encouraged so many people to vote and got the highest turnouts in history, and also ended the nullification crisis. Yes he made some mistakes, but he was one of the better presidents we have had.
That good doesn't compensate for all the bad, in my opinion.
I never met him.
