There is no objective advantage

Consciousness is a consequence of humans social , intellectual , and emotional evolution . It happened not on purpose.

It allows the specie to build tools and therefore eventually live longer and be safer.

Interesting replies. As an evolutionist I must accept that EVERY aspect of an organism exists because improves the chances of that gene's propagation. Feelings, sensory input and conciousness included. Plants turn toward the sun without conciousness, I assume. My hand pulls away instantly when I touch a hot iron. But then I look at the situation. Is consciousness then good at evaluating and initiating an appropriate response? If so, I have trouble comparing that to a computer. A computer can evaluate many

I guess I should have put this in a forum.

I'm going to put this in the science forum. Sorry about that.

I would say that consciousness has no evolutionary benefits. It allows for decisions to be made that are not based only on continuing the species or surviving. If humans were merely instinct based biological units with no real experiences or personality, it's evolution would be far superior.

Better choices given multiple sensory inputs.

Robots (computers) can choose between many options without consciousness

We have an innate disadvantage- we know for sure we're going to die, fade out, be gone, et cetera.

Someone or something could be conscious but only in so far as they receive sensations they don't understand and won't remember. Hence, consciousness doesn't really entail anything other than that there is a way it is like to be something. We can't even know that another person is conscious and not just doing everything because of physics. Of course a conscious person could also be doing everything because of physics BUT the point is they would be behaving the same as if they weren't conscious, making the consciousness or nonconsciousness of any person or object unknowable. The only thing a person can be sure is conscious is themselves.

Agreed^

Consciousness isn't an evolutionary outcome but a side-effect of intelligence. Any sufficiently-complex brain is conscious because it's just another word for complex, functioning system.
