Metaphor Man says: to provide answers to questions once unkown
Where is the option that says "to explain the unknown until a real answer is available?" Because that's what religion and the idea of God was originally made to be, to explain what people didn't know about.
To give a set of morals AND to explain nature. It fails at both, though.
It depends on the individual. And are we talking religion or organized religion?
I think religion has two primary purposes: to provide a passage to a higher power and to explain the unknown until the answer is found. I disagree on organized religion being the path to transcendence.
Religion would fall into several (not all) of these categories.
None of them to be honest, to understand the higher purposes in life. "Give a set of morals", well you can have morals without religion, so that's clearly not what it's for.
