Which country is to blame for WWI?

It may be plainly stated that Austria started it by declaring war on Serbia. I, however, believe that Germany was to blame. Austria knew that Serbia was allied with Russia, but Germany promised full support of Austria. Perhaps Austria would not have attacked had there not been support from Germany. After Germany attacked Russia for attacking Austria, it declared war on France. Britain, being allies with both Russia and France, had no choice but to join. So in my opinion, Germany turned the Austria-Russia/Se

A region named Germania was documented by the Romans before AD 100. During the Migration Period that coincided with the decline of the Roman Empire, the Germanic tribes expanded southward and established kingdoms throughout much of Europe. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire. During the 16th century, northern German regions became the centre of the Protestant Reformation. Serbia, officially the Republic of Serbia, is a country located at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, covering the southern part of the Pannonian Plain and the central Balkans. Serbia is landlocked and borders Hungary to the north; Roma... nia and Bulgaria to the east; Macedonia to the south; and Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro to the west; it also borders Albania through the disputed territory of Kosovo. The capital of Serbia, Belgrade, is among Europe's oldest cities and one of the largest in Southeast Europe.Serbs established several states in the early Middle Ages following the Slavic migrations. The Serbian Kingdom obtained recognition by Rome and Constantinople in 1217; the state was elevated to the Serbian Empire, in 1346. By the mid-16th century, the entire territory of modern-day Serbia was annexed by the Ottoman Empire, at times interrupted by the Habsburgs. In the early 19th century, the Serbian revolution established the nation-state as the region's first constitutional monarchy, which subsequently expanded its territory and pioneered the abolition of feudalism in the Balkans. Following disastrous casualties in World War I, and subsequent unification of Habsburg crownlands of Vojvodina and Syrmia with Serbia, the country co-founded Yugoslavia with other South Slavic peoples, which would exist in various formations until 2006, when Montenegro declared its independence. In 2008 the parliament of UNMIK Kosovo declared independence, with divergent responses from the international community   more

Austria-Hungary was a constitutional union of the Empire of Austria and the Apostolic Kingdom of Hungary that existed from 1867 to 1918, when it collapsed as a result of defeat in World War I. The union was a result of the Compromise of 1867. It was...  ruled by the House of Habsburg, constituting the last phase in the constitutional evolution of the Habsburg Monarchy. The Austrian and the Hungarian states were co-equal within the Empire. The Compromise required regular renewal, as did the customs union between the two halves of the Empire. Foreign affairs and the military fell under common control, but all other government faculties were divided between the respective states.Austria-Hungary was a multinational realm and one of the world's great powers. Austria-Hungary was geographically the second largest country in Europe after the Russian Empire, and the third most populous. The Empire built up the fourth largest machine building industry of the world, after the United States, Germany and Britain. The Austro-Hungarian Empire consisted of two monarchies and one autonomous country under the Hungarian crown: Croatia–Slavonia, which negotiated its own compromise, the Nagodba, with Hungary in 1868. Bosnia and Herzegovina was under Austro-Hungarian military and civil rule between 1878 and 1908, when it was annexed. Parts of the Sanjak of Novi Pazar, a province of the Ottoman Empire, was also under Austro-Hungarian military occupation during that period, but after the annexation of Bosnia the Austro-Hungarians withdrew   more

Nazi Germany

Nazi Germany and the Third Reich are common names for Germany during the period from 1933 to 1945, when its government was controlled by Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist German Workers' Party, commonly known as the Nazi Party. Under Hitler's ... rule, Germany was transformed into a fascist totalitarian state which controlled nearly all aspects of life. Nazi Germany ceased to exist after the Allied Forces defeated Germany in May 1945, ending World War II in Europe. After Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by the President of the Weimar Republic Paul von Hindenburg on 30 January 1933, the Nazi Party began to eliminate all political opposition and consolidate their power. Hindenburg died on 2 August 1934, and Hitler became dictator of Germany when the powers and offices of the Chancellery and Presidency were merged. A national referendum held 19 August 1934 confirmed Hitler as sole Führer of Germany. All power was centralised in Hitler's hands, and his word was above all laws. The government was not a coordinated, co-operating body, but rather a collection of factions struggling to amass power and gain Hitler's favour. In the midst of the Great Depression, the Nazis restored economic stability and ended mass unemployment using heavy military spending and a mixed economy. Extensive public works were undertaken, including the construction of Autobahns. The return to economic stability boosted the regime's popularity   more

Italy covers an area of 301,338 km² and has a largely temperate climate. With 60 million inhabitants, it is the 5th most populous country in Europe. Italy is also the 4th-largest economy in the European Union, 3rd in the Eurozone and 9th in the world.Italy's capital and largest city, Rome, has for centuries been the leading political and religious centre of Western civilisation, serving as the capital of both the Roman Empire and Christianity. During the Dark Ages, Italy endured cultural and social decline in the face of repeated invasions by Germanic tribes, with Roman heritage being preserved largely by Christian monks. Beginning around the 11th century, various Italian cities, communes and maritime republics rose to great prosperity through shipping, commerce and banking; concurrently, Italian culture flourished, especially during the Renaissance, which produced many notable scholars, artists, and polymaths such as Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Michelangelo and Machiavelli. Meanwhile, Italian explorers such as Polo, Columbus, Vespucci, and Verrazzano discovered new routes to the Far East and the New World, helping to usher in the European Age of Discovery. Nevertheless, Italy would remain fragmented into numerous warring states for the rest of the Middle Ages, subsequently falling prey to larger European powers such as France, Spain, and later Austria. Italy would thus enter a long period of decline that lasted until the beginning of the 18th century   more

How could Nazi Germany be an answer to the question? This was WWI, not WWII! Nazi Germany was founded in late 1933, and ended in mid-1945. Come on... On top of that, Slovakia was not an independent nation yet.... Czechoslovakia (or now known as two countries; Slovakia and the Czech Republic) was a nation that was founded in 1919 AT THE END OF WWI and was split into two countries during the later years of the Cold War (around 1991). Italy did not participate in the war and was not even part of the issue. Only some of these answers are even valid. Why Germany is an option is beyond me, Germany had nothing to do with the start of the war. In fact, Germany had nothing to do with the war until their allies of Austria-Hungary called them to arms and both nations (Serbia and Austria-Hungary) had allies that got involved. Give me a break...

I think it was the driver that took the wrong turn. The car had Franz Ferdinand in it. That put the car in front of Gavrilo Princip. Then Franz was shot.
