Diesel engines today are much better than the loud smoky engines of yesteryear. They are fairly quiet, powerful, last a long time (better TCO than gas), get good mileage, have higher resale value and already have an in place distribution system. Until the other options mature, diesel is the way to go. TCO study: http://tepper.Cmu.Edu/news-multimedia/tepper-stories/diesel-vs-gas/download.Aspx?Id=8865

What about natural gas (earthgas=Erdgas in German)? Less emissions than any diesel or gasoline car, fairly good range/fuel milage and the fuel is a lot cheaper (at least here in europe).
