@ladiesman Why is strict materialism inadequate?

@DrCereal Materialists say human thoughts and emotions are merely brain chemistry and animal lust. There is more to us than materialism accounts for. Human beings have two distinct powers that matter does not; free will and abstract thinking.

@ladiesman Why can neither free will nor abstract thinking be explained by material processes?

@DrCereal Materialism denies free will and says everything happens by necessity. It reduces man to complex machines with mere animal instinct. If all we have are animal instinct, then the strongest instinct would always win, but that's not the case. We are capable of choosing the lower instinct(e.G. Compassion) over the higher one(e.G. Self-preservation). There is more to us than mere animal instincts. And we can engage in abstract thinking because we have rational minds. Some animals may have intelligent instincts, but they don't have rational minds.

Why is free will a necessity? "We are capable of choosing the lower instinct(e.G. Compassion) over the higher one(e.G. Self-preservation)." This could be explained with natural laws. "And we can engage in abstract thinking because we have rational minds. Some animals may have intelligent instincts, but they don't have rational minds." Why is rationality something unattainable through natural laws?

Im an agnostic materialist. I know the world is matter, but I think its possible there is something more - Im just not sure what.

Without knowing much about the philosophies behind materialism, dualism, and spiritualism, I would clasify myself as a materialist. I hope you didn't ask this to evade my questions.

@DrCereal You think self-awareness, the ability to understand complex emotions, a capacity for empathy, abstract thinking, a sense of morality, free will, etc. can be explained by material interactions?

@ladiesman Yes.
