Sorry for this strange poll TBR. I am person A. Today at school a fellow student said, that there should be a genocide committed against anybody in my family. They said that it would be need to make sure I (as in my annoyingness) didn't come back after I was murdered. I replied that their statement says a lot about them, and then they replied with the statement that it says more about how annoying I am that they would commit a genocide to prevent me or my kind from existing.

Mathgeekjoe: Tell them that they can't commit genocide if they're dead.

@MathGeekJoe: My only advice to you is that you shouldn't be worried about statements like that made in high school. In the real world we have come to a near consensus that we don't much care for genocide. Children and teens are also more likely to say things that they don't mean out of spite or not yet fully understand the impact that their words can have on people. Stay strong and be yourself.

I am not worried, I have gotten many death threats before, I have gotten use to them. I just merely found someone even talking about killing everyone in my family to be highly insulting. They can kill me for being annoying, but they shouldn't even joke about killing my family. Also the student was an adult, they were 18 like me.
TheMarquis says2015-04-01T18:45:17.3418231-05:00
Then at 18 you should know better than to be offended by some immature comment. It is obvious that he was in the wrong and I doubt you really needed to bring that here.

If you don't get offended from people talking about killing you then I don't know what to get offended about. If I hear a person describing how they could beat me to death then get away with it by claiming insanity, I am fairly sure it is ok for me to be offended even if it was a joke. You claim it was obvious that he was wrong, yet everyone in the class agreed with him. Actually before the genocide part a different classmate talked about taking a piece of metal and stabbing me in the throat with it. I said that I would be ok with it since if they were going to murder me for being annoying then they were likely to murder someone else, effectively me dieing would prevent a future murder of someone else, I said they wouldn't get away with because there was like 10 witnesses in the room. Then effectively everyone in the room started say that they wouldn't have seen anything.

Since my fellow students didn't find anything wrong with genocide to prevent someone from being annoying, and it was a decent sized group of students, I didn't know for sure if everyone was like them.

It's called "thick skin." I don't throw fits over words because I've seen a lot worse. I'll be disappointed when people want to throw around hateful words. I'll be irritated if they try to hit me. I'll be legitimately offended if they are hurting me or somebody else. Here's a quote that helped me get to where I am with words, "The lion need not concern himself with the barking of the dogs." I hope that helps.

Like I said, I am not concerned, it is unlikely that they will kill me and even if they did, they would get caught and prosecuted. It is just a bit offensive when someone even jokes about killing people. It isn't like they were talking about beating me up or hurting me, they talked about killing. My personal belief is that no one should even joke about killing someone. Of course I have gotten use to people talking about killing me, I just am not use to people even joking about killing someones family. You said " I'll be disappointed when people want to throw around hateful words." Talking about killing someones family is a little more than a hateful words.

I just disagree. The severity of a blank statement doesn't matter if it is still a blank statement. Save your aggravation for when somebody seems to have intent. And I also disagree about not joking about death. Death is a terrible thing and humor is a defense mechanism. If you make death humorous in some scenario then you take the hit of a loved one's death easier.
Diqiucun_Cunmin says2015-04-02T04:10:38.0564974-05:00
I think that when the victim's family is involved, the severity of the insult quickly increases to the point that it's unacceptable. In my native language, to say 'may your whole family be dead' (more precisely, 'may your whole family be buried') is considered a swear word.
TheMarquis says2015-04-02T04:14:26.1099736-05:00
Who cares if it is a swear word? Words only carry as much harm as the action people are willing to put behind them. You can threaten me and cuss me out all you want to, but I only really care if I see some means by which you can harm me or my loved ones. If not then a blank threat, no matter the severity, is blank.
