Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)

The Central Intelligence Agency is one of the principal intelligence-gathering agencies of the United States federal government. The CIA's headquarters is in Langley, Virginia, a few miles west of Washington, D.C. Its employees operate from U.S. emb... assies and many other locations around the world. The only independent U.S. intelligence agency, it reports to the Director of National Intelligence. The CIA has three traditional principal activities, which are gathering information about foreign governments, corporations, and individuals; analyzing that information, along with intelligence gathered by other U.S. intelligence agencies, in order to provide national security intelligence assessment to senior United States policymakers; and, upon the request of the President of the United States, carrying out or overseeing covert activities and some tactical operations by its own employees, by members of the U.S. military, or by other partners. It can, for example, exert foreign political influence through its tactical divisions, such as the Special Activities Division. In 2013, the Washington Post reported that the CIA's share of the National Intelligence Program, a non-military component of the overall US Intelligence Community Budget, has increased to 28% in 2013, exceeding the NIP funding received by military agencies the National Reconnaissance Office and the National Security Agency. The CIA has increasingly taken on offensive roles, including covert paramilitary operations. One of its largest divisions, the Information Operations Center, has shifted focus from counter-terrorism to offensive cyber-operations   more

Irish Republican Army

The Irish Republican Army was an Irish republican revolutionary military organisation. It was descended from the Irish Volunteers, an organisation established on 25 November 1913 that staged the Easter Rising in April 1916. In 1919, the Irish Republ... ic that had been proclaimed during the Easter Rising was formally established by an elected assembly, and the Irish Volunteers were recognised by Dáil Éireann as its legitimate army. Thereafter, the IRA waged a guerrilla campaign against British rule in Ireland in the 1919–21 Irish War of Independence.Following the signing in 1921 of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which ended the War of Independence, a split occurred within the IRA. Members who supported the treaty formed the nucleus of the Irish National Army founded by IRA leader Michael Collins. However, much of the IRA was opposed to the treaty. The anti-treaty IRA fought a civil war with their former comrades in 1922–23, with the intention of creating a fully independent all-Ireland republic. Having lost the civil war, this group remained in existence, with the intention of overthrowing both the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland and achieving the Irish Republic proclaimed in 1916   more

Al-Qaeda

Al-Qaeda is a global militant Islamist and takfiri organization founded by Osama bin Laden in Peshawar, Pakistan, at some point between August 1988 and late 1989, with its origins being traceable to the Soviet War in Afghanistan. It operates as a ne... twork comprising both a multinational, stateless army and a radical Sunni Muslim movement calling for global Jihad and a strict interpretation of sharia law. It has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations Security Council, NATO, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, India and various other countries. Al-Qaeda has carried out many attacks on non-Sunni Muslims, non-Muslims, and other targets it considers kafir.Al-Qaeda has attacked civilian and military targets in various countries, including the September 11 attacks, 1998 U.S. embassy bombings and the 2002 Bali bombings. The U.S. government responded to the September 11 attacks by launching the War on Terror. With the loss of key leaders, culminating in the death of Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda's operations have devolved from actions that were controlled from the top-down, to actions by franchise associated groups, to actions of lone wolf operators   more

ETA

ETA, an acronym for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna is an armed Basque nationalist and separatist militant organization. The group is proscribed as a terrorist organization by the Spanish, British, French and American authorities, and used to be designated as...  such by the European Union as a whole. This convention is followed by a plurality of domestic and international media, which also refer to the group as "terrorists". Since 1968, ETA has been held responsible for killing 829 people, injuring thousands and undertaking dozens of kidnappings. More than 700 members of the organization are incarcerated in prisons in Spain, France, and other countries. The group was founded in 1959 and has since evolved from a group promoting traditional Basque culture to a paramilitary group with the goal of gaining independence for the Greater Basque Country.ETA's motto is Bietan jarrai, referring to the two figures in its symbol, a snake wrapped around an axe.ETA declared ceasefires in 1989, 1996, 1998 and 2006, and subsequently broke them. On 5 September 2010, ETA declared a new ceasefire that is still in force – on 20 October 2011 ETA announced a "definitive cessation of its armed activity". On 24 November 2012 it was reported that the group was ready to negotiate a "definitive end" to its operations and disband completely   more

Hezbollah

Hezbollah —also transliterated Hizbullah, Hizballah, etc.—is a Shi'a Islamic militant group and political party based in Lebanon. Its paramilitary wing is regarded as a resistance movement throughout much of the Arab and Muslim worlds, and is consid... ered more powerful than the Lebanese Army. The governments of the U.S., Netherlands, France, Gulf Cooperation Council, U.K., Australia, Canada, the European Union and Israel classify Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, in whole or in part.Hezbollah was conceived by Muslim clerics and funded by Iran following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and was primarily formed to offer resistance to the Israeli occupation. Its leaders were followers of Ayatollah Khomeini, and its forces were trained and organized by a contingent of 1,500 Iranian Revolutionary Guards that arrived from Iran with permission from the Syrian government. Hezbollah's 1985 manifesto listed its objectives as the expulsion of "the Americans, the French and their allies definitely from Lebanon, putting an end to any colonialist entity on our land", submission of the Phalangists to "just power" and bringing them to justice "for the crimes they have perpetrated against Muslims and Christians", and permitting "all the sons of our people" to choose the form of government they want, while calling on them to "pick the option of Islamic government"   more

Hamas

Hamas is the Palestinian Sunni Islamic or Islamist organization, with an associated military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, located in the Palestinian territories.Since June 2007 Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip, after it won a majority o... f seats in the Palestinian Parliament in the January 2006 Palestinian parliamentary elections and then defeated the Fatah political organization in a series of violent clashes. Israel, the United States, Canada, the European Union, and Japan classify Hamas as a terrorist organization, while Iran, Russia, Turkey, and Arab nations do not.Based on the principles of Islamic fundamentalism gaining momentum throughout the Arab world in the 1980s, Hamas was founded in 1987 as an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Co-founder Sheik Ahmed Yassin stated in 1987, and the Hamas Charter affirmed in 1988, that Hamas was founded to liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation and to establish an Islamic state in the area that is now Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. However, in July 2009, Khaled Meshal, Hamas's political bureau chief, said the organization was willing to cooperate with "a resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict which included a Palestinian state based on 1967 borders", provided that Palestinian refugees hold the right to return to Israel and that East Jerusalem be the new nation's capital   more

The US and UK consider the IRA terrorists. Ireland considers them a "criminal organization". Then there's the UVF, which were terrorists who wanted Northern Ireland to be part of the UK. The US and UK viewed them the same as the IRA, but in Ireland they were enemies of the state.

CIA and DOD are both recognized as part of the US government and as such CANNOT be terrorist organizations. While some of their activities may RESEMBLE terrorist acts, they could only be terrorist organizations if they separate from the government. The US takes responsibility as a NATION / STATE for their actions.

tahir.imanov says2014-02-05T04:34:04.3755755-06:00
@bigdave; terrorism - Systematic use of violence to create (a general climate of) fear in a population and (thereby) to bring about a particular political objective. (According this definition) USA, UK, France, Israel, Russia are terrorist governments. If (you) compare acts of USA (US Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, CIA, US Foreign Policy) to any (so called) terrorist organization, then by necessity this (terrorist) organizations should be called peace organizations.
bigdave says2014-02-05T13:05:30.1434663-06:00
@Tahir...... United States Law Code – the law that governs the entire country – contains a definition of terrorism embedded in its requirement that Annual Country reports on Terrorism be submitted by the Secretary of State to Congress every year. (From U.S. Code Title 22, Ch.38, Para. 2656f(d) (d) Definitions As used in this section— (1) the term “international terrorism” means terrorism involving citizens or the territory of more than 1 country; (2) the term “terrorism” means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents; (3) the term “terrorist group” means any group, or which has significant subgroups which practice, international terrorism; (4) the terms “territory” and “territory of the country” mean the land, waters, and airspace of the country; and (5) the terms “terrorist sanctuary” and “sanctuary” mean an area in the territory of the country— (A) that is used by a terrorist or terrorist organization— (i) to carry out terrorist activities, including training, fundraising, financing, and recruitment; or (ii) as a transit point; and (B) the government of which expressly consents to, or with knowledge, allows, tolerates, or disregards such use of its territory and is not subject to a determination under— (i) section 2405(j)(1)(A) of the Appendix to title 50; (ii) section 2371 (a) of this title; or (iii) section 2780 (d) of this title. Note well..... By subnational groups or clandestine agents
tahir.imanov says2014-02-05T13:22:28.8256297-06:00
@bigdave after analyzing your comment, US (government) still falls into group of terrorist organizations (which involved in international terrorism). How many civilian population were killed by drone attack during Obama administration?
bigdave says2014-02-05T14:08:25.8802161-06:00
@tahir:..... Can one identify the persons who ordered the drone strikes? (YES). Can one point to the building where those persons carry out those commands? (YES). Conversely, it took ten years to find Bin Laden. And he was in a non official dwelling. The distinction has to do with visibility and authorization. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was NOT terrorism as it was clear who did it and where the responsible parties were located. If a clandestine organization demands "protection" money, that may be terrorism. If a government demands "taxes to provide protection" that is NOT terrorism. In the end the distinction may be more theory than practice, but if one were to investigate the international rules of warfare, some clarity may become more apparent.
tahir.imanov says2014-02-05T14:18:47.1976917-06:00
When Bin Laden was found he was killed without court judgment, he wasn't read even Miranda rights. The US obviously violated human rights. And what Bin Laden has to do with it. Japanese had a right to declare war on USA, because US blocked Japanese oil transportation, without any warning, which is by itself is a declaration of war, but you did not know about it, and Pearl Harbor is not a soil of USA main land which means educate yourself about US laws. And Japan has nothing to do with it. Terrorism is systematic use of violence to create (a general climate of) fear in a population and (thereby) to bring about a particular political objective, which US does. You can try to redefine words, but it will not change its definition.
bigdave says2014-02-05T15:28:36.9144669-06:00
You are presupposing a number of things. I question the quality of the education you received. Three thousand people died in Sept 11th 2001 "without court judgment". One need not Mirandize a foreign national on foreign soil " which means educate yourself about US law". The US had not "obviously violated human rights". Trade embargoes are not an act of war. And how you presuppose that I "did not know about it " says something about you. Pearl Harbor was a US territory and it is irrelevant that it was not "a soil of USA main land ". And "Terrorism is systematic use of violence" by a SUBNATIONAL group acting without AUTHORIZATION from a NATIONAL GOVERNMENT.
tahir.imanov says2014-02-05T18:43:46.9662058-06:00
@bigdave you are saying systematic use of violence with authorization from national government is not a terrorism, so f@ck the civilians who died in Japan, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan and etc. Killing any person in foreign land by any state, which is not in war with that state is violation of all rights. Trade embargoes are not an act of war, but it is a declaration of war. 9/11 was committed in US soil by people who lived in US, and it is an act of crime, and terrorism. But it does not give to US right to occupy foreign land and systematically use violence and kill civilians.
bigdave says2014-02-05T20:05:41.6907418-06:00
@tahir.... You are very confused. Terrorism operates under the veil of darkness. It is secretive and without accountability. Japan declared war on the US fully 2 days before we declared war on them, but you don't know that. In the other countries you mentioned US troops operated in full uniform "in the light of day", with authorization via Washington, local governments and the UN! People such as FDR. LBJ, Bush, Clinton and Bush 2 were recognized as commanding the actions. Their location was held in the sunshine spotlight of the public and free press. The 911 terrorists were acting as clandestine agents of Al Queda and killed many persons. The US declared war on terrorism and any nation state which supports same. Also the US has been granted authority by local foreign governments to conduct anti terrorism actions within their borders. Where is the US operating without authority? What terrorist organization has been granted similar authority, and by which governments?
the_smart_one says2014-02-05T20:08:24.1030648-06:00
You guys should start a debate on this topic.
tahir.imanov says2014-02-05T20:22:00.0624491-06:00
@bigdave - if you say bush the second was held in the sunshine spotlight of the public and free press then by necessity you are stupid. Embargo is a declaration of war by itself, you do not have to verbally (or on paper) declare war to declare war. Japan had a right to declare war, it was justified. If you wear uniform and kill civilians systematically with authorization of state, then you are "hero of nation". And drone do not wear uniforms, and do not operate "in the light of day", it is an act of cowardliness.
