Why do atheists care?

Posted by: Redspectre

I just dont get it. They care so much about religion that they actively fight against it. Why? You are an atheist. The literal definition of not caring about anything.

I apologize in advance to people that will get offended. But this is all i see from this community.

How about option 6, they aren't actively fighting they are actively defending their right to abstain from religion

This question is stupidity on display.

Because we want people to do critical thinking. We consider critical thinking to be a good thing.

I find it incredibly ignorant when Theists try to vote on what Atheists believe. If you're not an atheist you have no idea what they believe or why they believe it. Any claims to understand are projections of personally held bias.

Redspectre, you make us theists look bad. Just stop with the polls.

Why should i stop? I see so much hypocrisy in the atheist community. An atheist is someone who does not care about god and therefore does not worship him. So what makes me confused is when i hear atheists rallying to fight against religion or stopping something religious. It doesnt make sense. If an atheist doesnt care then why the hell do they care about religion? And furthermore it seems like atheists love to silence freedom of religion for some unknown reason. I just want to get down to the bottom of why they care.
The_Immortal_Emris says2014-07-15T16:17:27.5219094-05:00
"An atheist is someone who does not care about god and therefore does not worship him" No, that's stupid. An atheist doesn't believe god even exists. It's not that he or she doesn't care, it's that they are unconvinced.
The_Immortal_Emris says2014-07-15T16:18:15.9080408-05:00
"So what makes me confused is when i hear atheists rallying to fight against religion or stopping something religious." Which doesn't ever happen, unless it has to do with government or public schools.
The_Immortal_Emris says2014-07-15T16:19:03.5243094-05:00
"If an atheist doesnt care then why the hell do they care about religion? " You're the only person suggesting they don't care. You are answering your own rhetorical question. You're burning the strawman you just built.
The_Immortal_Emris says2014-07-15T16:20:33.3023094-05:00
"and furthermore it seems like atheists love to silence freedom of religion for some unknown reason." Another idiotic thing to say. Atheists practice freedom from religion. You will never see an atheist barge into a church and demand people stop praying. An atheist does not want teachers leading children in prayer to Jesus, as that is an infringement on the child's right to be free from religious indoctrination from educators.

I'm a atheist and I am not against religion I just don't believe in a god. Sheesh!
ChosenWolff says2014-07-15T16:41:57.7146325-05:00
I never got it either. Why is it so important for some people, that they dedicate their entire lives to destroying others faith. If anything, the hope and virtue religion gives people is a good thing.
The_Immortal_Emris says2014-07-15T16:44:46.2694870-05:00
It's not the hope and virtue Atheists and secularists do not like. It is the justification of bigotry, through the citation of religious text which we reject. It is the indoctrination of our children into the faith of their teachers, which we take issue with. It is our laws being shaped by the subjective and arbitrary morality dictated by ancient books, which we reject. We have no issue with hope and virtue. We have issue with indoctrination and exclusion.
ChosenWolff says2014-07-15T16:47:55.9858472-05:00
Then I would have to agree with you, although most religions justify things in different ways. There are different churches who interpret things differently. But sometimes i feel it goes above that. Almost like reverse discrimination against the religious. There was a movement not to long a go where atheists united was lobbying congress to remove crosses from churches, or something like that. Religious practices and customs are abused more than you would thing. Especially for minority religions.

Because religion causes problems that do not need to be caused
SourFallacy says2014-07-17T19:36:01.2968942-05:00
Because Religion is a wide spreading ignorance that should have been left in the early stages of humanity. It holds back governments, intelligence, and scientific progress. It isn't coming from a place of hate, its coming from an eager need to change the barbaric thinking that has precedence over this world.
Togabear says2014-07-19T18:19:24.6673393-05:00
Redspectre, this is one of the dumbest misconceptions about atheists. Atheists simply do not believe in God or believe there is no God(depending on who you ask). There is nothing inherently meaningless or hateful about being an atheist. When you try to extrapolate someone's whole existence based on one belief, you are making gross generalizations. Atheists do not care about nothing, they have many similar goals as theists and religious followers. They want happiness, community, family, success, an understanding of the world around us. The reason why atheists combat religious think tanks is that they believe religion can be harmful and is wrong. It is similar professional theologians who preach their religious tenets, scientists who advocate for certain theories, politicians who advocate for a particular bill, doctors who advocate for certain medical treatments. It is in the nature of a believer in any ideology to advocate for it, since they believe it to be right. Many atheists just want to live in a secular society, with a separation of church in state. They want to live in an environment where the government is fair to all religious or lack of religious belief systems. Most atheists do not want to take away your right to religion or your right to religiously assemble, they just don't want it on state property and they do not want to be coerced into doing so. Also, atheists are not secretly religious or devil worshipers, the very act of worshiping the devil contradicts the definition of atheism. Do not extrapolate a notion and apply it to a whole group based off of a few dumbasses(who may or may not be trolling.) Oh one more thing, Hitler wasn't an atheist and he never tried to take away religion from Germany. He was a Roman Catholic, and was supported by the papacy during his time as Fuhrer. You can not point to totalitarian leaders as an argument against atheists, those were few atheists that just used atheism to create unity, similarly to governments that forced religion upon their citizens to create uniformity. Like England's Act of Uniformity
Redspectre says2014-07-20T16:36:33.8243752-05:00
No When you dont worship god you are worshiping the devil regardless of what you believe. Not worshiping god is worshiping satan. Furthermore, this country is a christian majority. If you dont want religion to be in front of you then i suggest you leave this country

Katie9876 says2014-07-22T17:56:05.6464472-05:00
This is really biased and offensive. Atheists are only fighting for the right to remain untainted by others opinions. As an atheist I am continually harassed (mainly by Christians but from other religions as well) to join their way of thinking. That is so offensive, I am perfectly happy living my life the way I believe is right. I don't go around ruing others lives, I go around and make them better. I think you need to consider how rude it is to group all atheists into one category as horrible. Even though I am tormented and insulted by religions that doesn't mean I have something against all religious people.
Redspectre says2014-07-23T18:06:32.1069204-05:00
Freedom of religion. You should be allowed to do whatever you want with your religion. If that means someone else doesnt like it then fine. Its a constitutional right and you have no right to go against it katie.

Ok. I hope my response covers each main question posed by the comments, so I will begin by saying that the original poster's definition of atheism as 'not caring about anything', which is false. That is an agnostic view; completely undecided and unbiased, claiming that the answer to whether there is a god is unknowable and should not be known. An atheist DOES care, because we know a God doesn't exist. Secondly, a rather worrying statistic: just over 40% of Americans believe the earth was created less than 10,000 years ago, despite endless evidence and proof. That equates to around 127,500,000 people denying proof and placing faith instead into a contradicting, hate-preaching, albeit important piece of historic literature, more commonly known as the bible. This itself isn't a problem, but the inevitability of this doctrine being forced onto young people, its manipulation of legislation (gay rights, education, taxes, etc) and ultimate teaching of valuing this funny book over centuries of research and learning in the face of proof and evidence that disprove their beliefs. This is why some atheists care and why some (such as myself) are secularists, who think religion as no place in government, education, and other areas of life which religion should have no concern over. I hope this answers the bulk of your question, but feel free to reply if you have any more.
