Why do people make an attempt to intelligently debate the existence of God on this website?

Posted by: Wolf_Fang

The debate for the existence of God is... Well not really a legitimate debate; it has no evidence to support it. And no, personal stories or the fact that it's been around for over two thousand years doesn't testify as evidence!

I was wondering: WHY ARE ATHEISTS SO OBSESSED WITH GOD & RELIGION? If you don't believe, it shouldn't even be of interest to you. Of course, if you are unsure of Divine existence, that would explain the continued obsession ... Questions ... Debates ... You're looking for answers!
Preston says2014-07-28T08:04:02.0286773-05:00
Tea is right, most people who instigate the question of god are atheist.

Why should not believing in god mean you have no interest in God and religion? Religion is actually quite interesting for me, especially things like creation stories.
jaksunmadness says2014-07-28T08:21:17.9403509-05:00
I agree with Tea as well. Atheists are always so obsessed with religion and God which is pretty ironic since they're not even supposed to believe in them.
JasperFrancisShickadance says2014-07-28T09:39:00.7146465-05:00
I agree, SweetTea.
reece says2014-07-28T09:52:26.1643407-05:00
@SweetTea I already answered that question.I said "i'm fascinated with religion like Epidemiologists are fascinated with diseases" or somthing like that.
Preston says2014-07-28T09:59:07.1856525-05:00
Reece it would be like being a Christian scientist that's interested in curing disease, not a doctor that studies disease that studies disease.
reece says2014-07-28T10:01:18.3373746-05:00
Christianity has held back the true nature of the world hence the disease reference.I still can't believe people still use miraculous healing, but i guess it's survival of the fittest in progress.
Preston says2014-07-28T10:04:18.5384992-05:00
@reece I know! My step great grandpa died last month from a 17 lb tumor on the back of his head, I had only met him once and it was very apparent, I get the idea of faith healing but if I had a tumor on me and I prayed and prayed and it kept growing, I would go see a doctor and be like "well guess that didn't work"
reece says2014-07-28T10:07:22.1987704-05:00
@Preston sorry about your granddad.
Preston says2014-07-28T10:07:58.1574633-05:00
Yea... I didn't really know him, he disowned me when I became Mormon, but I did get a sick car.
reece says2014-07-28T10:10:02.1798483-05:00
@Preston at least there was a plus side:P

Because they think they are right. Same reason people try and argue that God doesn't exist. What is the difference between being insane or arguing with an insane person, while knowing they are insane, and expecting to win?

@Heterodox coming from a guy who is con for the united nations.

Lol, wow, so many sociologist studying religion statistics in one thread! I don't believe that there is not a majority on either side, rather, people in general 'debating' their beliefs with the main (and incorrect) goal of helping the to self-assert themselves. When I hear people say 'Atheists/Christians are always so obsessed with..." I can only laugh at such hypocrisy as one is making such a baseless claim on an issue they themselves find baseless.. I am agnostic (atheists to some confused people), but I don't consider myself 'obsessed',, perhaps I am convinced by my own moral convictions to share my higher reasoning or enlightenment of what I have discovered, likewise those (creationists) with convictions from the holy spirit or likewise want, should, and sometime are self obligated to share theirs? So how best to address one's opinion? Moderation and maturity... And not firing back, hypocritically, making baseless and impossible-to-ascertain assertions about another opposed group, yelling (all CAPS), and the like.

A 17lb tumor? I think you have your number wrong. Also, I find interest in how so many people can fall for religion. I like to study it. A doctor studying cancer research does not like cancer -_-
SweetTea says2014-07-29T08:23:38.3596304-05:00
Reece ... Yes, you keep asserting that you are interested " fascinated with religion like Epidemiologists are fascinated with diseases" but the analogy does not fit (as I have already pointed out to you once). An Epidemiogist is fascinated with health & disease, because it is their job to do so. Your obsession with religion is not job-related, or motivated.
reece says2014-07-29T08:27:07.4940286-05:00
@SweetTea I am motivated by the horrible scar your religion and many others like it have imprinted on society.
reece says2014-07-29T08:29:37.6596286-05:00
@SweetTea and can you prove this to me "but the analogy does not fit (as I have already pointed out to you once)"
Preston says2014-07-29T08:39:33.5388646-05:00
Reece, not to disagree with you but tea is correct. A scientist that studies disease being interested in disease is normal, an extreme Christian that is interested in science is not. A person who doesn't believe in god shouldn't be interested in god.
reece says2014-07-29T08:48:28.7011204-05:00
@Preston Science is the engine of prosperity in the modern world.Christianity has held back scientific progress for 100's of years by killing and torturing people who actually wanted to find the true meaning of life. That why i'm interested in Christianity
reece says2014-07-29T08:55:49.0238978-05:00
They burnt "witches" that actually were making new types of medicines. They locked astronomers up for saying that the sun doesn't actually revolve around the earth, etc etc etc
reece says2014-07-29T09:02:31.2481585-05:00
Can't you see this is disgusting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-MIsgBjJmk
Preston says2014-07-29T09:10:53.0956395-05:00
That's what im saying, if one of those extremists were interested in science it would be weird and hypocritical, tea is saying you don't believe in god, but want to talk about it more than those that do, it doesn't make sense because, someone who doesn't believe in something shouldn't have interests about it.
reece says2014-07-29T09:15:59.3783769-05:00
@Preston LOL you don't get the point.SCIENCE/knowledge is what drives humanity to become more advanced and tolerant. Christianity/faith has held us back by claiming that they know every thing and then punishing those that disagree.
Preston says2014-07-29T09:17:23.7723609-05:00
@reece I think your generalizing religion, islam started pushing science far earlier than Europeans.
reece says2014-07-29T09:22:24.8225148-05:00
Preston I'm talking about Christianity by the way as i have said. There has been and still is a lot of cases in which Christianity is/has held back our species and others by doing so.
