"Sin requires payment." Why?
Because God is absolutely perfect, and he originally created a perfect world, and we sinned against him. Just like if you kidnap a child, you need to go to jail, so when we sin, we need to pay for it. However, Jesus took that punishment for us on the cross, so if you want to, you can accept his payment. If you don't you will have to pay for it yourself.
Hmm... How would one life possibly equate to the sin of over 7.8 Billion others?
@ifemeansevolutionisgood
The christian argument for that, I believe, is the Garden of Eden. It set the precedence for needing to pay for sin. If mishapqueen has a non-biblical explanation for why "sin requires payment" I would love to hear it or to correct me if I am wrong.
@YamaVonKarma,
It doesn't work quite how you are thinking. Jesus was perfect; he never sinned. He is also fully God and man. His blood is worth infinitely more than I can explain, and does adequately cover all the sins of the world. He paid the price of death for sin, fulfilled all of God's commandments perfectly, and made it possible for God and people to be reconciled.
@Tacet, I can't give a non-biblical perspective, because I am a Christian, but I do think you are correct in your summary. You touched on one of the many facets of this issue.
@mishapqueen
Understandable. I was just curious if you had a hypothetical argument for justifying a payment for sin separate from the explanation established within the bible (i.E. If an omnipotent God exists, what would have to happen for there to be a requirement to pay for sin?). My current understanding of what you would answer is the initial defiance of the word of God by creation is what caused there to need to be an event to pay for sin.
@Tacet, I can't think of another at the moment, but I'll keep thinking and keep you posted!
That does not get close to answering why a god needs a sacrifice. Couldn't god do something so powerful (which even humans can do) called forgiving them? There is no logic behind the need of a sacrifice to a god for a god to forgive someone.
I agree, an all-powerful god shouldn't have to do anything. Something that is all-powerful only does what it wants to. Maybe, we are a game to him?
It's time for me to go out and rebuild religion... Everyone will speak and I'm putting everyone's words to light. With the power of God https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uft4yUJR3L4
I believe the main Christian theological explanation is that God established laws and that he chooses to operate within those laws. This was among the first things to lead me away from Christianity. I would NEVER order genocide, or throw people into fire to suffer for eternity. This would seem to indicate that I would be more loving than a god of infinite love. Since that is insane, I began to look elsewhere.
Sin requires payment. The only way to pay for our sins besides Jesus is to die ourselves. That is why Jesus had to die.
If sacrifice was possible for an omnipotent god, that would mean there is something such a god could not do.
omnipotent is all powerful. if they are all powerful, than they don't HAVE to do anything.
Jesus didn't have to die. He did it because He loved us. Plain and simple.
The entire concept of the "Divine sacrifice" is beyond stupid. If a god is omnipotent...well...then they should be able to do anything. The whole Jesus episode is a plot hole the size of Jupiter. Granted, if you were to sum up all of the plot holes in the Bible...there would be nothing left but a big hole.
