Would you vote for an openly atheist presidential candidate?

Assume that atheism plays no real role in their election platform. But simply the fact that they are an atheist, would that make you less inclined to vote for them?

  • Yes, I would vote for them regardless of their religious beliefs or lack of.

  • No, I would not vote for them because their belief system is too different from my own.

  • This is why we have the first Amendment right, freedom to religion, if they believe to not believe in god fine.

  • Not sure how our God, the almighty Flying Spaghetti Monster (peace be upon him) relates to this?

  • The flying spaghetti monster, the real god has nothing to do with any of this.

  • i would have to really agree with their platform, but yes.

  • A politicians religious beliefs should have nothing to do with countries that, to their credit, have always separated church and state - and that includes Canada and the USA. I would much rather have an atheist as president than somebody who thinks Jesus (or even worse, elders of his church) can tell him or her what to do.

  • Religious and political are two separate things, so I should not vote based on my beliefs in gods or whatever.

  • Religion should be the very last factor you consider. There are more important things to worry about.

  • As long as they are an able presidental candidate, I am fine with them

It depends on their policies. I want a pro-life candidate, is the atheist candidate going to be pro-life?

Mathgeekjoe, I guess then you would pick the option yes, because you looked at the candidates policies first, before making your judgement.

If a pro-choice candidate could pull a nation in poverty to a rich and developed country, would you not vote for them?

@triangle.128k We're still waiting for Obama to do this. That's why.

Reeseroni, waiting for Obama to do what? Fix the mess that the people of your political persuasion elected into office made in the first place? Obama has already done so much for our nation, and even then Republicans STILL block him and prevent him from doing anything that would allow him to have a decent legacy. That is literally their main goal, not the progress and productivity of the American people.

Whatever Obama did, wouldn't you still support a candidate that could pull a nation like India into a superpower, only they disagree with you on abortion?

Also, we have already had an atheist president, Thomas Jefferson
